
Humanoid robots surpass human sprint times at Beijing World Robot Games
Over 2,000 humanoid robots gathered at Beijing's Ice Ribbon arena for the second World Humanoid Robot Games, where a biped clocked a 9.39-second 100-metre sprint.

The second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games opened on Saturday, 22 August 2026, inside the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Known as the Ice Ribbon, the venue originally hosted events during the 2022 Winter Olympics and now serves as the competition grounds for 2,000 humanoid robots. Participating engineering teams, corporate developers, and academic laboratories travelled from 16 countries, including delegations from Italy and China. Domestic manufacturers built approximately 95% of the machines taking part in the five-day tournament. Organizers scheduled 1,301 individual contests across 51 distinct disciplines, blending athletic trials like sprinting and high jump with demonstrations in dancing, table tennis, and martial arts. The programme also incorporates practical assessment trials designed to test robotic utility inside manufacturing facilities, commercial restaurants, corporate offices, and emergency rescue environments.

Sprint results on the track
Track events delivered the fastest benchmark times of the opening weekend as specialized bipeds contested running heats. Tiangong Ultra, a red, headless humanoid built by a Beijing research centre in partnership with Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor, took part in the 100-metre sprint on Saturday. State broadcaster CCTV reported that the biped finished the distance in 9.39 seconds, eclipsing the human world record of 9.58 seconds set by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in 2009. On Sunday, Tiangong Ultra returned to the track for the 400-metre sprint, winning the heat with a time of 38.15 seconds and finishing nearly five seconds ahead of the human world mark. Other bipedal units showcased unconventional movement mechanics during the 400-metre heats. A white-cased machine propelled itself by sweeping its arms from side to side and tilting steeply forward to stay upright through the turn.

Mobility limits and arena failures
Alongside the sprint times, multiple machines encountered mechanical and balance limitations during competitive events. Several robotic runners collapsed immediately upon the firing of the starter gun, while others proved capable of only a slow walking pace across the track. Deceleration posed a recurring issue for high-speed units, with several sprinters colliding with protective foam mattresses placed at the finish line and producing electrical sparks upon impact. Complex team sports revealed further control difficulties. Humanoid football players moved slowly and scored awkward goals, prompting cheers from the stands. In the boxing ring, another biped stumbled into the ropes and fell flat on the canvas, remaining completely stationary until technicians entered the enclosure to lift it away.
Domestic applications and spectator reactions
The games drew hundreds of spectators to the Olympic venue to observe mechanical locomotion and evaluate how close humanoid technology is to practical deployment. Attendees followed both the athletic trials and the operational demonstrations intended for home and workplace assistance. Hou Yali, a 72-year-old Beijing retiree who regularly employs domestic staff for cooking and household cleaning, watched the races and considered the gap between specialized speed trials and everyday tasks.
We will be able to see more clearly if machines can surpass humans. For now, it is only running, a simple speed competition. This is not a test of intelligence, nor hiring someone to perform household chores or act as a home helper.
The tournament schedule runs through Wednesday, 26 August 2026, when final demonstration rounds and scenario-based assessments conclude in Beijing.
