How to become a pilot in Thuringia: clubs offer low-cost path to the skies
Thuringia's air sports association says about 1,000 active pilots fly across the state, with training through volunteer-run clubs costing little more than a driver's license and entry possible from age 14 for gliders.
Training paths across the state
Thuringia offers all common air sports disciplines, according to Bernd Pulzer, managing director of the Luftsportverband Thuringia. Flight sites are distributed fairly evenly across the state, meaning aspiring pilots usually face no long journeys to reach a training facility. Depending on location, training is available in motor flight, glider flight, ultralight flight, hot air ballooning, and skydiving. Model flight clubs provide an additional entry point, particularly for children and adolescents, with a large number of clubs across the state. Two routes lead to the cockpit: commercial flight schools or one of the air sports clubs. The German Aero Club and the Luftsportverband consider both paths equally effective for learning to fly. Commercial schools tend to offer faster and more flexible training, but at higher cost.
Costs and access
Because clubs are typically run by volunteers, training may take somewhat longer, Pulzer explained. The financial outlay, however, can be close to the cost of obtaining a driver's license. Precise pricing is difficult to state, as club fee structures and the types of licence pursued vary. Club membership generally brings cheaper flight-hour rates, deeper insight into technology and procedures, and social connections within a community.
The opinion that air sports is only for wealthy people is fundamentally wrong
Requirements for a pilot's licence are few. Applicants for a private pilot licence must be at least 17 years old, and a doctor must confirm physical fitness. A normal state of health usually suffices, and wearing glasses or having physical limitations are not necessarily disqualifying factors. Glider flight is accessible from age 14, balloon piloting from age 16, and model flight from childhood onward.

Pilot numbers and demographic challenges
Thuringia currently has about 1,000 active pilots, according to Pulzer. Membership in air sports, as in nearly all other sports, has been slightly declining in recent years. Pulzer attributed this partly to demographic trends making themselves felt in the sector, and partly to a growing number of competing leisure activities for young people. The leisure behaviour of adolescents has also changed, he noted, adding to the challenge of recruitment. The sport remains predominantly male, with women accounting for about 10% of participants. Promoting women and youth is therefore a priority for the future.
A club-level view from Jena
Andreas Litzba, chairman of the Fliegerklub Carl Zeiss Jena, which specialises in glider flight, reported 14 students currently in training, including two young women. The demand for training places exceeds what the club can offer, partly because wild boars damaged the runway some months ago, turning it into a cratered landscape and making regular flight operations impossible. Even though the club is well staffed in terms of personnel, maintaining enough volunteer commitment to sustain operations remains an increasing challenge.
