Cassandre Beaugrand wins second world triathlon title with victory in Pontevedra

World title secured in Galicia

French triathlete Cassandre Beaugrand secured her second world triathlon championship on Saturday, 26 September, by winning the World Triathlon Championship Series finals in Pontevedra, Spain. The 29-year-old athlete, born in Livry-Gargan and competing for AS Monaco Triathlon, entered the season finale as the clear leader in the global standings with 4,000 points. She held the top spot ahead of her closest pursuers, Beth Potter of Great Britain and Tilda Mansson of Sweden. While a podium finish was sufficient to secure the 2026 world crown, Beaugrand claimed first place outright on the course in Galicia. The race took place in the home region of five-time Spanish world champion Javier Gomez.

Dominant performance across three disciplines

Beaugrand established her victory through controlled execution across all three segments of the race. Following a strong start, she held her place in the front pack throughout the 1.5-kilometre swim. She then maintained her position safely inside the lead peloton across the 40-kilometre cycling leg. On the concluding 10-kilometre run, her strongest discipline, Beaugrand pulled away from the field. She crossed the finish line with an advantage of more than one minute over British competitors Georgia Taylor-Brown and Kate Waugh.

The Pontevedra triumph marked Beaugrand's fifth WTCS race win of 2026, completing an undefeated series run that included previous victories in Alghero, Quiberon, London, and Weihai. The win was also the fourteenth WTCS victory of her career. Speaking in Pontevedra after the race, the French champion evaluated her 2026 campaign.

2026 was the best of all my years and it's going to be hard to do better next year.

Multi-title standing in women's triathlon

The result elevates Beaugrand into a select group of athletes who have won at least two world triathlon championships. She now ranks behind Flora Duffy of Bermuda, who holds four world titles and 15 career series victories, and Emma Snowsill of Australia, who won three world championships. Her fourteenth career victory brings her within one win of Duffy's all-time series record. The title arrives two years after Beaugrand won both the Olympic gold medal in Paris and the 2024 world championship. The 2026 sweep also marks a recovery from the 2025 season, when she struggled following her Olympic success and was forced to abandon the world championship finals in Australia.

Dual campaign in track and road athletics

Beaugrand divided her competitive season in 2026 between international triathlon and elite track and road athletics. Over the course of the year, she set French national records across three distinct athletics events. These included a 5,000-metre record on the track in Nice and a 10-kilometre road record set in Lille, alongside a national record in the 3,000 metres. In July, she achieved a long-standing personal goal by taking part in the Monaco Diamond League meeting. Her performances on the track opened up the possibility of representing France at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Beaugrand ultimately chose to bypass the European athletics event to concentrate her training on the concluding stages of the triathlon calendar.
