Chicago Bears defeat Carolina Panthers 59-37 in highest-scoring NFL opener

The Chicago Bears opened the 2026 season with a 59-37 road victory over the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. The two teams combined for 96 points, exceeding the previous NFL season opener high of 88 points set in Tampa Bay's 48-40 victory over New Orleans in 2018. Chicago gained 552 total yards, including 291 rushing yards, across 70 offensive plays under head coach Ben Johnson. The 59 points were the fourth-highest single-game total in Bears franchise history and the most points ever surrendered by Carolina in its 32-year existence. Chicago had not scored this many points in a season opener since putting up 45 against the Green Bay Packers in 1948.

Williams and rushing attack pace Chicago

Quarterback Caleb Williams accounted for four touchdowns, completing 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two scores while rushing for 65 yards and two additional touchdowns. Williams guided Chicago to a 31-24 halftime advantage, connecting on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Cole Kmet and scoring twice on the ground. Running back D'Andre Swift, who signed a $33.75 million contract extension earlier in the week, recorded 124 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Kyle Monangai added 100 rushing yards on 10 carries, which included a 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Chicago pulled away after receiver Jahdae Walker delivered a perimeter block that allowed Monangai to score without being tackled.

Johnson pointed to Walker's downfield blocking effort as a core standard for Chicago's offense.

That is the stuff that gets me excited. When I see the little guys blocking, if I see the offensive line getting around the ball and pushing the pile, that's the stuff that gets me going.

Williams also singled out the 61-yard touchdown sequence following the win.

I walked over to them after the play and said, 'You all didn't get the view I got.' It was pretty sweet. I think that play, specifically, is who we want to be.

Carolina defense struggles in second half

Carolina tied the game at 31-31 with 9:02 remaining in the third quarter after a 2-yard touchdown run by Chuba Hubbard. Quarterback Bryce Young completed 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, while adding a 7-yard rushing score. Wide receiver Jalen Coker caught eight passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns, and Hubbard scored both on a run and a reception. Chicago then scored 28 unanswered points following a late-hit penalty against defensive end Derrick Brown and an incomplete fourth-down pass from Young to Tetairoa McMillan near midfield. The Panthers surrendered 552 total yards despite spending $165 million during the offseason on free agents Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd.

Fifty-nine is an ugly score to put up as a defense. It's embarrassing. But I do think it's a good opportunity for us.

High scoring across opening week slate

The 96-point game in Charlotte contributed to elevated scoring across the first week of the 2026 NFL regular season. Entering Sunday night, NFL teams averaged 50.1 points per game, putting the league on pace to surpass the previous post-merger opening week high of 49.4 points per game recorded in 2012. Across the league, 10 teams scored at least 30 points on Sunday, tying for the third-highest total in Week 1 history behind 1986 and 2002. Other high-scoring outcomes included the Detroit Lions defeating the New Orleans Saints 31-30 in overtime, the Buffalo Bills beating the Houston Texans 36-31, and the Baltimore Ravens defeating the Indianapolis Colts 41-23.
