Bavarian Forest bark beetle damage drops to 25-year low with 4,000 cubic meters recorded in national park
Beetle-damaged timber in the Bavarian Forest National Park fell to 4,000 solid cubic meters in 2026, down from 144,000 in 2023, while state forest damage dropped to 8% of spruce harvests.
Drop in beetle-damaged timber
Damaged timber volumes attributed to the bark beetle have dropped in the Bavarian Forest National Park to roughly 4,000 solid cubic meters (Festmeter) as of late August 2026. Park director Ursula Schuster stated that this volume represents the lowest recorded level in a quarter of a century. In the peak damage year of 2023, the park accumulated 144,000 Festmeter of beetle-damaged wood, which dropped to around 7,000 Festmeter across the full year of 2025. The bark beetle season in the region typically extends until November. A comparable decline occurred across the Bavarian State Forests (Bayerische Staatsforsten), where beetle-damaged spruce dropped from nearly 1.14 million Festmeter in 2024 to about 164,000 Festmeter so far in 2026.

Buffer zone and management tactics
Following the high infestation levels of 2023, private woodland owners voiced concerns that beetles would spread from the national park into neighboring timberland. The national park designates 75% of its total area as a natural protection zone where bark beetles are left unmanaged without forestry intervention. The remaining 25% of the park area forms a surrounding management zone designed to contain the pest and protect adjoining properties. Foresters in this perimeter track infestations by routinely inspecting tree trunks for bore dust. Workers promptly fell and remove infested spruce before new insect generations emerge. Monitoring traps deployed by the Bavarian State Institute for Forestry (LWF) also indicate declining insect numbers throughout the districts of Freyung-Grafenau and Regen.

Specialized debarking technologies
Forest managers in the park rely on mechanical debarking methods to curb beetle reproduction while preserving deadwood nutrients on site. Park teams deploy specialized debarking harvesters that fell spruce, strip limbs, and peel away the outer bark in a single pass. Alternatively, forestry crews remove strips of bark along the trunk to prevent beetles from establishing nesting tunnels. These techniques remain effective only when applied while the beetles are in their flightless white stage as eggs, larvae, or pupae. Stripping bark at this developmental phase halts insect maturation and allows logs to decay naturally on the forest floor rather than being transported out for commercial sale.
Inter-agency coordination and forest conversion
The updated figures were presented during an on-site briefing near Spiegelau with Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger. The discussion brought together officials from the Bavarian State Forests, the state forestry administration, the national park authority, and private forest owners associations. The meeting followed previous joint consultations held in 2024 and 2025 to coordinate regional beetle control strategies. Officials noted that long-term forest resilience relies on transforming regional monocultures into diverse mixed-species woodland. At the briefing site near Spiegelau, natural sapling regeneration is already visible among debarked logs felled during the 2023 infestation.
