FC Barcelona confirmed the signing of defensive midfielder Rodri from Manchester City on 18 August 2026. Rejection of Real Madrid and sporting fit

Although born in Madrid and raised in Villanueva de la Cañada, Rodri chose Barcelona over interest from Real Madrid. Real Madrid had signed six players during the summer window, including Yan Diomande and Marc Cucurella, but had not signed a successor to Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Rodri cited direct discussions with Flick and Barcelona's positional philosophy as the decisive factors in his choice, explaining that Flick's tactical approach offered opportunities to develop further.

The midfielder was scheduled to sit out Barcelona's friendly against Egypt's Al Ahly on Wednesday evening to regain match fitness following Spain's international campaign. Barcelona enters the new season seeking to secure the Champions League, an honor the club last claimed 11 years earlier.

Financial restructuring behind the registration

Barcelona completed the acquisition despite carrying €2.27 billion in debt as of April 2026, according to footballfinancelab.com data. The club previously encountered player registration obstacles with Dani Olmo in 2024 and 2025 under Spanish league financial regulations, requiring an injury-based exemption for Andreas Christensen and a sports court ruling. To balance the squad's payroll, sporting director Deco finalized the sale of Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain for nearly €50 million, while Robert Lewandowski's departure cleared an estimated €26 million in annual wages. Removing Marcus Rashford from the wage roll created additional headroom to absorb Rodri's reported €15 million annual salary, alongside fellow arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi.

Manchester City legacy and international honors

The move concludes Rodri's seven-year tenure in Manchester, which began when he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2019. Under Pep Guardiola, who ended his managerial role at City in summer 2026, the midfielder won four consecutive Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner also captained Spain to the 2026 World Cup title and received the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. In a farewell video posted on 18 August, Rodri addressed the Manchester City fanbase and recalled arriving in 2019 to play alongside teammates such as Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.
