The deal marks a return to Spanish football for Rodri seven years after he left Atlético Madrid for England in 2019.

The total fee remains subject to varying reports. The New York Times puts the package at €76.5 million, with €60 million upfront and the remainder in add-ons, most described as achievable. El Mundo reports the figure at approximately €75 million, while La Vanguardia places it under €70 million, with a maximum of €60 million fixed and the rest conditional on variables. All sources agree the fixed component is €60 million.

Negotiation timeline and competing interest

Barcelona's formal approach began on August 7 with an opening offer of €45 million plus add-ons, which City rejected. La Vanguardia reports the initial proposal included €45 million fixed and up to €10 million in variables, while El Mundo cites up to €5 million in add-ons. A second offer of €60 million was also turned down before the clubs converged on the final figure. City had been holding out for close to €80 million, aware that Rodri had entered the final 12 months of his contract and showed no willingness to extend.

Real Madrid had also explored signing the Spain captain this summer, according to The New York Times and SAPO, but Rodri preferred a move to Camp Nou. Contract details and squad context

El Mundo reports Rodri will sign a four-year contract running until June 30, 2030, with an annual salary of approximately €15 million. He becomes Barcelona's fourth signing of the summer. The same outlet reports that sporting director Deco has been finalizing both the Rodri deal and the arrival of João Cancelo, Rodri's former City teammate from 2019 to 2023, who will join on a free transfer.

At Barcelona, Rodri would join seven teammates from Spain's 2026 World Cup-winning squad: Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal.
