Barcelona begins La Liga title defence at Elche following World Cup delay
Hansi Flick's squad travels to the Estadio Martínez Valero on Sunday for their delayed season opener against Martín Anselmi's Elche side.
Delayed start to the league campaign
FC Barcelona begins its 2026–27 La Liga campaign on Sunday at 21:30 against Elche at the Estadio Martínez Valero. The defending champions enter matchday two without having played a game, as their scheduled matchday one fixture against Athletic Club at Spotify Camp Nou was postponed to Thursday, 27 August. The postponement provided mandatory rest for players participating in the 2026 World Cup. Real Madrid experienced the same scheduling delay, with their opening match against Real Sociedad moved to Wednesday, 26 August.
Elche enters the encounter with one match completed and one point in the league standings. In their opening fixture on Monday, 17 August, Martín Anselmi's side earned a 1-1 draw against Deportivo de La Coruña at Riazor. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for Deportivo in the 21st minute before Marc Aguado leveled the score with a header in the 76th minute. Anselmi took over the Elche dugout this season following the departure of Eder Sarabia, which the club announced in May 2026.

Squad overhaul and selection limitations
Barcelona aims to win three consecutive league titles for the first time since Pep Guardiola guided the club to three straight championships ending in 2011. Hansi Flick's squad enters the season following significant roster turnover during the summer transfer window. Robert Lewandowski, Ronald Araujo, and Ferran Torres left the club, removing a combined 30 goals from last season's squad. After an option to sign Julián Álvarez was discarded, Barcelona remains without a new senior striker as the transfer window approaches its final days.
The club added new personnel by signing Rodri Hernández, Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, and securing the retention of Joao Cancelo. However, Flick faces multiple squad absences for Sunday's away match. Midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji are sidelined due to injuries. Rodri missed Wednesday's presentation at Spotify Camp Nou and continues individual training to build match fitness; Flick confirmed the Spanish midfielder will be available starting Monday. Jesse Bisiwu is also ruled out because his registration has not been completed with the league.
Pre-season results and head-to-head record
During pre-season preparations, Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim emerged as Barcelona's top goalscorer with four goals, putting himself in contention to start at center-forward. Barcelona concluded their warm-up matches with four wins, a penalty shootout defeat against Birmingham, and a loss to Udinese during a triangular tournament in Italy. Their pre-season results included a 5-2 win over Basel with goals from Adeyemi, Abdelkarim, Lamine Yamal, and two from Bisiwu, followed by a 2-1 victory over Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy with goals from Abdelkarim and Raphinha.
