Barcelona beat Elche 5-0 in La Liga opener with braces from Raphinha and Fermin

Raphinha leads experimental attack

Hansi Flick opened Barcelona's 2026-27 La Liga campaign at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero without a recognized senior center forward following the departure of Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain and the unavailability of Robert Lewandowski. With newly targeted forward Julian Alvarez ruled out and young Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim kept on the bench, Flick named Raphinha as team captain and deployed him as a central attacker. The Brazilian forward opened the scoring in the 14th minute, earning a penalty after a foul by Elche defender Victor Chust and converting the spot-kick past goalkeeper Matias Dituro. Raphinha celebrated the opening strike with a Spider-Man gesture dedicated to his son, setting the tempo for Barcelona's vertical counter-attacking system. The tactical shift gave Barcelona early control despite an experimental starting lineup that saw academy player Xavi Espart start at left-back in place of Alejandro Balde.

Clinical counter-attacks double the lead

Elche, managed by Martin Anselmi in his second official match after succeeding Eder Sarabia, maintained possession during the first hour through midfielders Villar and Marc Aguado. Anselmi set an aggressive high defensive line with center-backs advancing toward the halfway line, leaving open space behind that Barcelona exploited through rapid transitions. In first-half stoppage time, Lamine Yamal combined with Raphinha, who squared the ball for new signing Karim Adeyemi to score his debut goal with a right-footed finish. Adeyemi operated on the left flank while Lamine Yamal played on the right wing, completing an attack supported by Marc Bernal, Gavi, and Fermin Lopez. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia and defender Eric Garcia held off Elche's entries into the penalty area to preserve the lead before the interval.

Second-half surge and bench impact

The contest broke open in the final thirty minutes after Flick introduced Anthony Gordon in the 66th minute to replace Lamine Yamal on the wing. Gordon quickly delivered two assists off the bench, first setting up Raphinha to secure his second goal of the evening. The English winger then provided a pass to Fermin Lopez, who finished from close range to extend the lead to four goals. Fermin completed his brace shortly before full time, turning his marker inside the penalty box with a reverse spin before placing the ball into the net for the final 5-0 scoreline. Both Gordon and Adeyemi registered goal contributions in their competitive debuts for the club.

Injury concern and upcoming fixtures

The sole setback for Barcelona occurred during a high-pressing sequence when midfielder Gavi challenged Elche defender Felix Affengruber. Gavi fell to the ground in distress clutching his right knee, subsequently leaving the pitch to undergo medical imaging tests to evaluate the severity of the injury. Flick had already managed squad rotation by keeping Rodri in Barcelona alongside Balde, while Joao Cancelo did not start after completing only two training sessions. Seven members of Spain's World Cup squad received pre-match recognition at the Martinez Valero before kickoff. Barcelona return to league action on Thursday, hosting Athletic Club at the Camp Nou for their first home fixture of the season.
