Bangladesh skittle Australia for 198 as Hasan Mahmud takes 6-55 on day one in Darwin

Australia collapse after strong start

Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat on a green-tinged wicket at Marrara Oval in Darwin, and Australia reached 45 without loss as openers Jake Weatherald and Travis Head looked comfortable. The match was Australia's first Test since their 4-1 Ashes triumph over England, and Cummins's second Test appearance in 13 months as he reunited the full-strength pace attack of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon.

The collapse began in the 12th over when Hasan Mahmud had Weatherald (23) edge to wicketkeeper Litton Das. Head (22) chopped on in Hasan's next over to leave Australia 52-2. Marnus Labuschagne (1) then edged Ebadot Hossain to captain Najmul Hossain Shanto at second slip, reducing Australia to 61-3. Cameron Green (13) fell to Taskin Ahmed immediately before lunch, leaving the hosts 74-4 at the interval.

Smith's reprieves and resistance

Steve Smith was dropped on two by Tanzid Hasan at third slip off Ebadot, and survived another chance next over when a Taskin edge flew through a vacant third-slip position. He also benefited from a not-out review when Bangladesh appealed for caught behind off Ebadot, only for Snicko technology to show a flat line as the ball passed the bat. Smith went on to score 71 from 109 balls with seven boundaries and a six, the ninth batter to fall when he advanced at Hasan and top-edged to Litton Das.

We haven't played a Test match for a while and it can take some time to get into it. It wasn't easy. The ball was doing stuff and you have to be patient. Perhaps we got dragged into a few we didn't need to, but that's the pressure.

The 198 total was Australia's lowest in Tests against Bangladesh, below their previous worst of 217 in Mirpur in 2017.

Hasan Mahmud leads the attack

Hasan, 26, recorded his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket, finishing with figures of 6-55. He was supported by Taskin Ahmed (2-55) and Ebadot Hossain (2-39) as Bangladesh's seamers exploited the surface across the first two sessions.

I was just trying to bowl line and length, trust the process and follow what the captain was saying.

After the lunch interval, Ebadot removed Alex Carey (19) and Taskin bowled Beau Webster (12) before Cummins (9) and Starc (1) both edged Hasan behind prior to tea.

Bangladesh reply with composure

Bangladesh's top order batted with resilience as the pitch flattened out under afternoon sun. Starc provided the sole breakthrough when Shadman Islam (20) offered a leading edge that Nathan Lyon caught at cover point. That wicket made Starc the most prolific left-arm bowler in Test history with 434 wickets, moving past Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath.

Tanzid Hasan (32 not out) and Mominul Haque (35 not out) combined in an unbroken 60-run partnership to guide Bangladesh to 96-1 at stumps, trailing by 102 runs. The performance came in Bangladesh's first Test match in Australia since 2003, a match most observers expected the visitors to lose inside three days.

It would have been nice to have taken a few more wickets. So, hopefully we start well in the morning, pick up a few early ones and put a pressure on.
