La Oreja de Van Gogh and director Fernando González Molina develop musical film 'Puedes contar conmigo'
Spanish pop band La Oreja de Van Gogh will executive produce 'Puedes contar conmigo', an original romantic musical feature directed by Fernando González Molina and based on the group's song catalogue.
Film announcement and creative team
Spanish pop group La Oreja de Van Gogh and a team of Spanish film producers announced development of a feature-length musical titled Puedes contar conmigo. The film will feature an original romantic story built around the San Sebastián band's musical catalogue. Fernando González Molina is attached to direct the project and is co-writing the screenplay alongside Miguel López Martínez. The production team brings together Beltrán Gortázar of Arce Studios, former Movistar Plus+ fiction director Domingo Corral, and Lazona founder Gonzalo Salazar-Simpson. The band members will also serve as executive producers on the film, which is currently in an advanced stage of development and scriptwriting.
Band reflections and reunion background
The cinematic project follows the group's 2026 reunion tour across Spain, titled Tantas cosas que contar, which marked the return of original lead vocalist Amaia Montero following the departure of Leire Martínez. The tour staged more than 100 concerts and recorded ticket sales exceeding 400,000 across the country. Formed in 1996, the group has accumulated more than 50 Platinum and Gold discs throughout its career and recently became the only Spanish band to place a song in Spotify's Billions Club. Band members Álvaro Fuentes, Xabi San Martín, Haritz Garde, and Montero shared initial pre-production meetings and script excerpts on social media. The band released a joint statement describing the transition of their song catalogue into cinema.
Seeing that our songs will gain a new life in cinema is a dream for us. Always we have told stories through our music, and knowing that now those stories will inspire such a large visual and narrative universe fills us with excitement. We are at a beautiful moment at our career, feeling the affection of many, many people and we believe 'Puedes Contar Conmigo' will be a marvellous celebration of what unites us with our audience.
Production team and industry background
The producers involved hold extensive backgrounds across Spanish television and film distribution. Domingo Corral, who stepped down from his role at Movistar Plus+ in April 2025, oversaw television series including La peste, Antidisturbios, Rapa, and La Mesías, alongside feature films such as Sirât, Los tigres, and As bestas. Beltrán Gortázar previously served as chief executive of Suma Content during the development of series such as Superestar, while Gonzalo Salazar-Simpson produced titles including Ocho apellidos vascos and No habrá paz para los malvados. Arce Studios shared working photographs of early meetings with the band alongside draft script pages. Corral described the group's song catalogue as the core emotional anchor of the feature.
What will make it distinctive will be the band's songs. It is an absolute pleasure to work with La Oreja de Van Gogh, executive producers of the film, whose songs are part of Spain's emotional memory.
Directorial approach and box office track record
Fernando González Molina enters the production following his recent directorial releases Cronos and Mi querida señorita. His previous filmography includes the Baztán trilogy and multiple romantic features that achieved high box office earnings in Spanish cinemas. His 2010 film Tres metros sobre el cielo generated 9.9 million euros, followed by 12.1 million euros for Tengo ganas de ti in 2012 and 17.1 million euros for the 2016 period drama Palmeras en la nieve. The creative team plans to combine traditional romantic musical formats with modern cinematic conventions. González Molina framed the project as both a technical challenge and a personal ambition to adapt the music into a contemporary musical format.
- Three Steps Above Heaven (2010)
- 9.9 € million
- I Want You (2012)
- 12.1 € million
- Palm Trees in the Snow (2016)
- 17.1 € million
Translating the universe of La Oreja into an original story is a huge challenge for me. It is also the fulfilment of a dream: updating the great romantic musicals, which I have always loved, to the codes of current cinema.
