
Baltic cyclone kills two and leaves over 500,000 without power across region
A cyclone brought winds exceeding 67 mph and heavy rain across Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and northeastern Poland, killing two people and cutting electricity to hundreds of thousands.
Fatalities and physical destruction
A violent cyclone moving across the Baltic Sea region between Saturday night and Sunday morning left two people dead and caused widespread physical damage in Latvia and Lithuania. In the central Latvian city of Jelgava, one person died when extreme winds triggered the collapse of a building on Saturday night. Further injuries were recorded throughout Latvia, including a firefighter injured during cleanup operations in Bauska and an individual struck by a falling tree in the Aizkraukle district.
In Lithuania, public broadcaster LRT reported that a man died after a falling tree hit him while he was fishing near a lake during the tempest. Wind speeds in Riga exceeded 67 mph on Saturday, accompanied by intense rainfall that reached half of the average monthly total at multiple meteorological stations. The winds uprooted hundreds of trees across the Latvian capital, splitting a mature tree in Vērmane Park, damaging vehicles, fences, and traffic signals, and flooding streets, courtyards, and basements.

Grid failures and infrastructure paralysis
Electrical transmission systems suffered severe disruptions, leaving approximately half a million people without electricity across Latvia and Lithuania. In Latvia, more than 250,000 customers lost power, with eastern and central territories sustaining the heaviest damage. The national high-voltage transmission grid operator, AST, issued a formal update regarding the scale of the failure.
The strong storm caused the most extensive disruptions to electricity supply in many parts of Latvia in the last 20 years, most severely affecting the eastern and central parts of the country.
In Lithuania, more than 220,000 customers were without power at the peak of the storm, according to Renaldas Radvila, director of energy distribution operator ESO. Downed trees blocked roads and brought localized street flooding across Vilnius. The power cuts in Latvia also crippled telecommunications, with mobile providers Latvian Mobile Telephone (LMT), Tele2, and Bite registering service outages. Riga Airport stated on Sunday morning that flights faced delays or rerouting, while fallen branches severed tram catenaries and suspended major transit lines in Riga.

Regional impact across Estonia and Poland
The storm system extended beyond Latvia and Lithuania, causing disruption in neighboring countries along the Baltic coastline. In Estonia, strong winds battered western and northern regions alongside coastal islands, halting island ferry connections and delaying cross-border passenger trains arriving from Latvia and Lithuania.
In northeastern Poland, the outer bands of the cyclone severed power lines, leaving more than 100,000 people without electricity. Municipal workers and emergency teams across all four affected countries spent Sunday clearing fallen timber from railway tracks, highways, and residential streets as conditions slowly began to stabilize.
Emergency management and meteorological assessment
Latvian Finance Minister Māris Kučinskis convened a meeting of the national crisis management group to coordinate recovery efforts, debris removal, and infrastructure repairs. Kučinskis led the response on behalf of Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, who was traveling on an official visit to Ukraine.
Meteorologists noted that the event ranked among the most destructive in recent decades. Andris Viksna of the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center evaluated the storm's severity relative to past events.
This seems to be the most severe storm in Latvia since 2005 in terms of its overall impact.
Viksna added that while formal attribution studies remain pending, human-caused climate change plausibly intensified the rainfall delivered by the cyclone. Meteorological agencies reported that weather conditions would improve through Sunday, with calm weather expected across the region by Monday.
