Australia stuns Turkey 2-0 in World Cup opener as Popovic's selection gamble pays off
Coach Tony Popovic's decision to start 22-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Beach instead of veteran Mathew Ryan sparked a resounding 2-0 win over Turkey at Vancouver's BC Place.
The selection surprise
Tony Popovic dropped captain and regular goalkeeper Mathew Ryan for Patrick Beach, a 22-year-old with only two previous international caps. The coach also replaced vice-captain Jackson Irvine with 21-year-old Paul Okon-Engstler in a starting XI that featured 10 World Cup debutants. Popovic told reporters the choices were not shocks inside the camp. "It's a team selected to perform well. Regardless of the result it was the right decision."
Beach's defensive masterclass
Turkey dominated possession and fired 30 shots, eight on target, but Beach denied every one. In the 30th minute he fully outstretched to tip Abdulkerim Bardakci's long-range effort off the post. Later he dived low to stop Arda Guler's free kick and turned away Kerem Akturkoglu's close-range attempt. The Melbourne City keeper finished with eight saves and a clean sheet. Beach said, "A couple of days ago, the boss and our keeper coach pulled me aside and told me that I'd be playing. They had confidence in me."
Irankunda and Metcalfe make the difference
Australia struck on the counter in the 27th minute. Okon-Engstler launched a long ball that split the Turkish defence, sending Nestory Irankunda racing through. The winger controlled it with one touch and finished low inside the near post for his sixth international goal. He celebrated by boxing the corner flag, an homage to former captain Tim Cahill. In the 75th minute, Connor Metcalfe collected a loose ball 20 yards out and swept a low drive into the net to seal the win.
Turkey's fruitless dominance
Turkey, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, held 72% of possession and camped in Australia's half but could not break down the compact green-and-gold wall. Coach Vincenzo Montella said, "We are extremely saddened. We know there is still time to recover." He added, "They're very tall, so it's very difficult sometimes," as Australia repeatedly won aerial challenges. Captain Hakan Calhanoglu had stated pre-match that his side was more talented, but the Turkish attack rarely found clean openings.

What comes next
The result moved Australia into second place in Group D behind the United States, who beat Paraguay 4-1. Australia next face the co-hosts in Seattle, while Turkey meet Paraguay in San Francisco on 19 June needing a win to stay in contention for the knockout rounds. Montella was gracious in defeat, saying of Australia, "They have been very good."
