Australia advances to World Cup last 16 after goalless draw with Paraguay; Turkey stuns USA in consolation win
Australia secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup round of 16 with a 0-0 draw against Paraguay, while already-eliminated Turkey beat group winners USA 3-2 in a dramatic finish.
Australia and Paraguay play out goalless draw
Australia and Paraguay played out a cautious 0-0 draw in San Francisco, a result that suited both sides. Australia, needing only a point to guarantee second place in Group D, defended solidly and rarely threatened. Paraguay, also on three points before the match, were content to avoid defeat and now wait to see if four points will be enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
The match was described as one of the dullest of the tournament, with few clear chances and neither team pushing hard in the closing stages. Australia's Harry Souttar anchored the defence, while Mohamed Toure offered occasional threat on the break. Paraguay were without suspended star Miguel Almirón, sent off in the previous match against Turkey for covering his mouth during an argument, a new FIFA rule introduced at this World Cup. Diego Gómez was also a likely injury absentee.
Turkey stuns USA in consolation win
In Los Angeles, Turkey salvaged pride with a 3-2 victory over the United States, who had already secured top spot in the group. The match was a lively affair, with Auston Trusty giving the hosts an early lead in the 3rd minute. Arda Guler equalised for Turkey in the 10th minute, and Baris Alper Yilmaz put them ahead in the 31st. Sebastian Berhalter levelled for the USA shortly after half-time, but Kaan Ayhan scored a dramatic winner in the 98th minute.
