Attica authorities seize 6.2 tons of unsafe meat, uncover illegal plant in Ilion
An unlicensed meat processing facility in Ilion was raided, leading to the seizure of 6,047 kg of unlabeled products and a trace-back to 20 businesses across the Attica region.
The Ilion facility
Inspectors from the Region of Attica carried out a check at a meat production and processing facility in Ilion, in the West Sector. They found that the company registered at the address had ceased operations, while another firm was active on the same premises without the required approval for processing, producing and distributing meat products. The facility was not included on the approved list of the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET).
During the inspection of the cold storage rooms, the teams identified and seized 6,047 kg of products deemed unfit for the market. The items either lacked legal labeling or carried invalid codes.
Tracing the supply chain
An immediate and extensive trace-back of the products' route revealed that unsuitable preparations had been distributed to 20 food businesses across Attica. This triggered a coordinated response involving the Region's services in six regional units and EFET. New checks led to the confiscation of an additional 151 kg of products, bringing the total quantity of seized meat to 6.2 tons.

Official response
Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias stressed that the inspection was part of a systematic effort to protect consumers.
Once again, the services of the Region of Attica protected public health through a strict inspection process. My standing order to the competent Deputy Regional Governor and the inspection mechanisms is clear: zero tolerance for unscrupulous individuals who play dirty games with the safety and family budget of citizens.
Deputy Regional Governor Dimitra Angelaki noted that the single inspection in Ilion uncovered "an entire distribution route of products to 20 businesses across Attica." The Region stated that inspections and the imposition of sanctions will continue across the entire supply chain.
Next steps
The seizure reports issued by the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary of the West Sector have become definitive, irrevocable and enforceable. Three-member committees have been formed to examine the imposition of administrative sanctions on those involved.
