Boycotts hit Lisbon comedy festival

The Commedia a La Carte Fest, an international comedy festival scheduled to take place in Lisbon from 29 October to 1 November, became the center of a cultural dispute following the announcement of Jerry Seinfeld as its headlining act. The controversy began with social media posts questioning local performers about sharing a stage with the American comedian, citing his vocal support for Israel and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. In response, a series of Portuguese artists cancelled their scheduled performances. The departing acts included the Tributo Pop show featuring Carolina Deslandes, Tatanka, and Bárbara Tinoco, alongside musical collective Cuca Monga. Additional cancellations followed from visual artist Vhils, stand-up comedian Pedro Tochas, actress Inês Aires Pereira, and the comedic duo Cebola Mol, composed of Eduardo Madeira and Filipe Homem Fonseca.

Performers explain lineup departures

While several participants did not publicly elaborate on their specific reasoning, the sequence of departures was characterized across the cultural sector as a collective boycott. Inês Aires Pereira explicitly linked her withdrawal to Seinfeld, stating that he insistently defends indefensible acts and that she refused to normalize what she termed a genocide. The musical comedy duo Cebola Mol announced their departure by posting an image of a watermelon, an established symbol of solidarity with Palestine. The movement also drew international attention, with Spanish actor Javier Bardem sharing international news reports on social media to express support for the Portuguese artists leaving the lineup. Festival creator César Mourão had assembled the roster months prior, with participants remaining on the bill for four months before the wave of cancellations began.

Cultural commentators question the boycott

The wave of departures generated direct counter-criticism from leading Portuguese commentators and journalists. Speaking on SIC Notícias on 12 September, comedian and presenter Ricardo Araújo Pereira addressed the controversy during an interview with Diogo Teixeira Pereira on the program Facto Político. Araújo Pereira stated that while he was personally invited by festival creator César Mourão and could not attend due to other commitments, he would not have withdrawn over Seinfeld's presence. He criticized Seinfeld for past public conduct regarding the Israeli military, but maintained that sharing a lineup does not imply political alignment. He argued that if sharing a bill meant mutual endorsement, Seinfeld would logically be endorsing every other participant on the program as well.

Araújo Pereira addressed Seinfeld's public appearances in Israel during his interview:

“In the course of a massacre, having yourself photographed laughing, handling weapons with the Israeli armed forces, is something that borders on the obscene.”

Araújo Pereira also questioned the timing of the boycotts:

“If participating on that bill means agreeing with a massacre, then they agreed for four months.”

Debates over artistic alignment

Other Portuguese commentators echoed criticism of the artists who pulled out of the festival. On SIC Notícias, commentator Pedro Mexia noted on the program Programa Cujo Nome Estamos Legalmente Impedidos de Dizer that anyone with political objections should never have agreed to join the lineup initially, given that Seinfeld's political stance was already globally public knowledge. Writing in the newspaper Público, columnist João Miguel Tavares described the late withdrawals as depressing, accusing the departing performers of succumbing to herd thinking. Tavares argued that cancelling an appearance because of another performer's personal politics demonstrates intolerance toward differing viewpoints and reflects a dogmatic rather than democratic approach to cultural events.
