Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City: Tzolis debuts with two assists as Gunners claim Community Shield
Arsenal demolished Manchester City 3-0 at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium to win their 18th Community Shield, with Greek debutant Christos Tzolis providing two assists on his first official appearance for the club.
Tzolis shines on Arsenal debut
Christos Tzolis made an ideal official debut for Arsenal, providing two assists as the Gunners defeated Manchester City 3-0 to claim the Community Shield at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. The 24-year-old Greek winger, a new signing from PAOK, set up both the second and third goals, leaving his imprint on Arsenal's 18th Community Shield title. Mikel Arteta's side, the reigning English champions, claimed the first trophy of the English season with a performance that never let City settle.
Early goals settle the match
Arsenal needed just 24 seconds to take the lead. Lewis-Skelly played a through ball to Riccardo Calafiori, who finished coolly past Donnarumma in a one-on-one to make it 1-0. The goal came from Arsenal's first attack of the match. Manchester City attempted to respond without creating a clear chance in the opening phase. In the 18th minute, a cross from Anderson failed to find Erling Haaland. City came closest in the 21st minute, when Phil Foden shot but David Raya saved. The Arsenal goalkeeper was alert again in the 40th minute, denying Haaland, and White blocked a subsequent effort from Doku. Arsenal went into the break with complete control and a two-goal lead.
Tzolis delivers first assist
Tzolis, operating from the left side of Arsenal's attack, showed his intent from the opening minutes. In the 10th minute he created a dangerous situation with a cross from the left, and he continually searched for spaces to trouble City's defence. His decisive moment came in the 28th minute. Martin Odegaard found the Greek international on the left, and Tzolis headed the ball into the path of Kai Havertz. The German did not waste the opportunity, heading it past Donnarumma to double Arsenal's lead. Tzolis was involved in another chance before half-time, feeding Havertz who laid the ball off to Odegaard, but the Norwegian could not find the target.
Second assist after the restart
The second half began as the first had ended, with Tzolis at the centre of Arsenal's attacking play. In the 48th minute, he collected the ball on the left, drifted toward the centre, and read Odegaard's movement into the penalty area. He fed the Arsenal captain at the right moment, and Odegaard completed the scoring for 3-0. The trio of Tzolis, Odegaard and Havertz proved the difference, with Odegaard involved in the build-up to the second goal and finishing the third.
- Calafiori scores 1-0 from Lewis-Skelly through ball past Donnarumma
- Havertz heads in 2-0 from Tzolis headed assist
- Odegaard finishes 3-0 from second Tzolis assist
Maresca's first game ends trophyless
The match marked Enzo Maresca's official debut on the Manchester City bench in the post-Guardiola era. His first competitive fixture ended without silverware. Donnarumma, in goal for City, could not prevent any of the three goals. The Community Shield, equivalent to a Super Cup, pits the league champions against the FA Cup winners, and City were unable to mount a response after falling behind inside the opening minute.
