Saka breaks deadlock in Birmingham

Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory against Aston Villa on Monday at Villa Park to extend their clean-sheet start to the Premier League campaign. The decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute when winger Bukayo Saka bundled the ball into the net from close range. The move developed on the left flank after half-time substitute Eberechi Eze found an underlapping run from left-back Riccardo Calafiori, who squared the delivery across the face of the goal. The strike represented Saka's second goal in two league appearances this season and his 83rd overall for Arsenal across all competitions.

Five minutes before the opening goal, refereeing decisions had altered proceedings when Ian Maatsen challenged Saka. An initial penalty award was overturned to a free kick just outside the penalty area following a video review, which Martin Odegaard subsequently placed wide. Villa's closest chance had come during the first half when midfielder Emiliano Buendia struck a long-range shot against the crossbar.

Villa struggle after summer rebuild

The defeat left Aston Villa without a point, a goal, or a single shot on target across 180 minutes of league football this term. New signings stepped into the starting lineup, with Nicolas Jackson debuting as the central striker and Japan international Zion Suzuki taking over in goal to become the first Japanese goalkeeper in Premier League history. Injury concerns for the champions

Arsenal managed the contest despite suffering fitness setbacks in their defensive ranks during the second half. Centre-back Cristhian Mosquera went down holding his thigh in the 78th minute and was forced off the pitch. His exit brought on Konsa for his Arsenal debut, ten days after the defender completed a £51 million (€59.5 million) transfer from Villa. The club was already missing William Saliba, who remains sidelined until at least October with a back injury sustained at the World Cup.

Six minutes after Mosquera's departure, midfielder Declan Rice also limped off the field and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi. Rice had experienced lower back and hamstring discomfort during the summer following a 55-match campaign for Arsenal last season. Manager Mikel Arteta marked his 250th league match in charge of the club with the win, fielding an unchanged starting eleven from the previous 3-0 victory against Coventry.
