Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign on Wednesday with a 1-0 away victory against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Arsenal controlled possession and produced 26 attempts on goal, setting a club record for an away match in the competition, alongside an expected goals tally of 4.05. Despite that territorial dominance, the decisive breakthrough arrived in the 75th minute. Following buildup play involving Bruno Guimaraes, Ben White and Christos Tzolis in the right half-space, captain Martin Odegaard collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area. The 27-year-old Norwegian midfielder struck a left-foot shot past substitute goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, sending the ball in off the inside of the right-hand post.

Missed chances and defensive resilience

Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri set up his side in a compact defensive shape after injuries to midfielders Scott McTominay and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa forced tactical adjustments. Kevin De Bruyne made his first start of the season alongside Billy Gilmour, while Mathias Olivera started at left-back. Arsenal created several clear scoring opportunities during the first half, including a 22nd-minute close-range header from Mikel Merino that was tipped over the crossbar by starting goalkeeper Alex Meret. Meret also pushed a cross-shot from Piero Hincapie off the goal line in the 32nd minute. Shortly before the interval, Bukayo Saka was played clear by Odegaard but lifted his effort over the crossbar.

Second-half adjustments and physical toll

Napoli suffered an injury setback at the interval when Meret was replaced by Milinkovic-Savic due to a thigh problem. Arsenal continued to press after the restart, though Hincapie missed an open opportunity inside the penalty area in the 50th minute. Napoli threatened periodically through counter-attacks orchestrated by Rasmus Hojlund, with Matteo Politano and De Bruyne both forcing saves from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Mikel Arteta made four changes to his starting lineup compared to Sunday's 2-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea, giving starts to Hincapie, Merino, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres. Late in the match, substitute Noni Madueke broke clear in the 85th minute but failed to extend the lead.

The result extended Arsenal's winning run in Champions League league-phase fixtures to 13 consecutive matches, following eight wins in eight group matches last season. For Napoli, the defeat marked a third consecutive loss across all competitions, following Serie A defeats to Inter Milan and Como. Arsenal host Lille in their next Champions League fixture on 13 October, while Napoli travel to face Villarreal on the same date.
