French actor Arnaud Denis undergoes euthanasia in Belgium at 43 following hernia mesh complications

Medical decline and decision

French actor and theatre director Arnaud Denis died by assisted dying on 22 September 2026 at age 43 in Namur, Belgium. His lawyer, Philippe Courtois, confirmed the procedure followed consultations with three Belgian physicians. Denis had been admitted to a palliative care unit on 18 March 2026 while awaiting formal approval of his request. His health issues began on 17 July 2023 after a routine surgical procedure to repair a right inguinal hernia with a polypropylene mesh implant. The operation triggered severe chronic pain, autoimmune dysfunction, and a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ASIA syndrome) from a neurologist.

The decision of Arnaud Denis was taken in consultation with three doctors in Namur. His body could no longer support him. He had lost control. The death of Arnaud Denis is the consequence of the intense pain he suffered for many months.

Surgical removal and escalating illness

Following the initial operation, Denis reported that the implant caused persistent inflammation throughout his body. Because no surgeon in France agreed to extract the mesh, he traveled to the United States in April 2024 to undergo a removal surgery costing 40,000 euros. Although localized pain temporarily eased three weeks after returning to Paris, his broader condition worsened steadily. The neurological complications left him bedridden, unable to leave his home, and forced him to abandon his stage career.

I can no longer leave my home, I have no social life, I have no life at all. I have nothing left of what constitutes the dignity of a human life. And it is getting worse and worse. I live like a terminal cancer patient. Doctors have nothing left to offer me.

Legal fight and institutional criticism

On 5 January 2026, Denis filed a criminal complaint with the Paris Public Health prosecutor alleging involuntary bodily injury. The complaint contended that the surgical team failed to warn him of risks beyond chronic pain and pointed to systemic failures in medical tracking. Prosecutors dismissed the case in late August 2026 citing an insufficiently characterized offense, a ruling that drew a public rebuke from Denis on 18 September 2026. In a final statement on Facebook, Denis criticized the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) for its handling of implant alerts and accused private clinics of withholding mesh reference numbers from patients.

Artistic career and advocacy work

Before his illness, Denis established a prominent theatrical career in France after founding his own company at age 15. He earned three Molière Award nominations, including Best Male Revelation in 2017 and Best Director in 2019 and 2025, and received the French Critics' Syndicate award in 2025 for directing "Les Liaisons dangereuses". He also directed "Les Femmes savantes", which won the Prix du Brigadier, and took screen roles in the 2014 film "Yves Saint Laurent" and the 2016 television series "Blaise". During his illness, he created the collective "Victimes françaises des prothèses de hernies", which brought together hundreds of patient testimonies on social networks. Courtois confirmed that he had appealed the dismissal of the criminal complaint and will continue legal proceedings on behalf of the family.
