Armed man arrested at Trump's Los Angeles golf course ahead of RNC fundraiser, police find weapons and 'disturbing notes' at home

The arrest

On Sunday, August 2, 2026, 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele was taken into custody at the Trump National Golf Course near Los Angeles. Plainclothes federal agents reported a suspicious man walking the grounds and taking photographs and video of what appeared to be security-planning activity for President Donald Trump's visit. Deputies patted him down and recovered a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition from his trouser pocket. A search of his vehicle in a nearby parking lot turned up a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber and another loaded magazine of hollow-point rounds.

What police found at his home

The following day, Monday, August 3, authorities executed a search warrant at Taele's residence in Downey, a city near Los Angeles. Inside, they seized an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a.45-calibre 1911 pistol, an AR-platform upper receiver, body armour, high-capacity magazines, bulk pistol and rifle ammunition, two radio-signal devices and multiple notebooks containing what officials described as "disturbing notes." The sheriff's office did not disclose the specific content of the notes, but their characterization heightened concerns about the suspect's intentions.

Charges and court appearance

Taele faces four counts: receiving a large-capacity magazine, carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, possession of a short-barrelled rifle or shotgun, and second-degree robbery over a separate incident alleged to have taken place on 4 November 2025. He appeared in court on Tuesday, 4 August, and pleaded not guilty to all four. A Los Angeles County judge set bail at $250,000, ordered him to stay away from the Trump golf course, barred him from possessing weapons and from leaving California while the case proceeds, and set his next hearing for 26 August.

Context: prior security incidents involving Trump

The arrest occurred as Trump was preparing to attend a fundraising dinner for the Republican National Committee at the same golf club. The incident adds to a series of security events around the former and current president. On 25 April 2026 a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, hitting a Secret Service Uniformed Division officer in the chest. The officer was wearing body armour and was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and the man was tackled before he reached the ballroom below. He has since been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. In September 2025 a jury convicted Ryan Routh on five counts over an incident at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, among them attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate. On 4 February 2026 Judge Aileen Cannon sentenced him to life in prison plus seven years.

The investigation into Taele's motives is ongoing. No shots were fired in the Sunday incident, and Trump was not on the premises at the time of the arrest. The FBI's Los Angeles field office says its Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating alongside the Secret Service and the sheriff's department and has declined to comment further, adding that investigators have identified no credible threat to the surrounding community.
