Armed man arrested at Trump's California golf course days before fundraiser, charged with illegal firearm possession
Jeanine John Taele, 38, was detained on Sunday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes after federal agents saw him photographing security preparations and he told them he worked for the State Department. A search of his home uncovered an illegally modified rifle, body armor and notebooks with concerning statements.
Arrest at the golf course
On Friday, 31 July, Jeanine John Taele, 38, first aroused suspicion when he was seen at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos of security-planning activity for President Donald Trump's scheduled visit. Plainclothes federal agents continued to monitor him. On 2 August Taele returned to the club. Golf course staff alerted the agents, and Taele approached them and said he was employed by the State Department and was there on a security detail. He then admitted he had a loaded firearm in his car in the club car park. The agents called in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, whose deputies found that Taele was wanted in connection with a robbery case out of El Segundo. He was detained, and a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition was found in his trouser pockets. In his pickup truck investigators recovered a loaded 9mm pistol with a magazine of hollow-point rounds, a pair of binoculars and a badge reading "security protection agent".
Search of Downey home
On Monday, 3 August, sheriff's detectives and FBI agents executed a search warrant at Taele's residence in Downey, a Los Angeles suburb. They seized an illegally modified AR-style rifle, a.45-calibre 1911 pistol, an AR-platform upper receiver, a body armor vest, high-capacity magazines, a large quantity of pistol and rifle ammunition, two radio-signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing what investigators described as concerning statements. The contents of the notebooks have not been made public.

Charges and investigation
Taele was charged in a federal criminal complaint with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, a felony carrying a statutory maximum of 10 years, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California announced on 4 August. He also faces charges in Los Angeles Superior Court arising from the same incident, reported as carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition, with bail set at $250,000. Authorities have not presented evidence that he intended to harm the president, and a criminal complaint carries only allegations: he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
While we are still investigating the motives of this individual, we are thankful he was apprehended before the President's visit. Federal and local law enforcement stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring.
Patrick Grandy, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, added:
There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump's life, and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, working with our partners at the U.S. Secret Service, the ATF, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, will investigate this case thoroughly.
Trump's response
President Trump arrived at the golf club on Tuesday evening, 4 August, for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner held behind closed doors. In an interview with Fox News, he addressed the arrest:
It gives me a little bit of comfort that only the significant presidents get targeted. And I am definitely significant.
The event was closed to the press.
Previous assassination attempts
The incident is the latest in a string of security threats against Trump. In July 2024, a gunman fired from a rooftop during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, wounding Trump in the ear. In September 2024, Secret Service agents shot at an armed man hiding in bushes at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida; the suspect, Ryan Routh, was convicted in September 2025 on five counts, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, and was sentenced by Judge Aileen Cannon on 4 February 2026 to life in prison plus seven years. In April 2026, Trump was evacuated from a press gala in Washington after an armed man tried to enter the hall, triggering a shooting.
