Armed veteran arrested at Trump's California golf course faces federal weapons charges

Jeanine John Taele, a 38-year-old former US Marine corporal deployed to Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2010, was arrested on Sunday 2 August 2026 at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, two days before President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit the resort for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner. Federal agents first observed Taele on the property on Friday 31 July, wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos of security planning activities. When he returned on 2 August, he approached federal agents and stated that he was employed by the State Department and was at the location for a security detail, then admitted he had a loaded firearm in his car. Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies who responded to the club found that Taele was wanted in connection with a robbery case out of El Segundo, and he was detained.

Items recovered

A search of his pickup truck in the club car park turned up a loaded 9mm pistol with a magazine of hollow-point rounds, a pair of binoculars and a badge reading "security protection agent". A 16-round magazine found in his trouser pockets also contained hollow-point ammunition. On Monday 4 August 2026, law enforcement searched his home in the nearby city of Downey and recovered an illegally modified AR-style rifle with a barrel cut down to 10 inches (25 cm) from 14 inches (35 cm), a.45-calibre 1911 pistol, an AR-platform upper receiver, a body armor vest, high-capacity magazines, a large quantity of pistol and rifle ammunition, two radio-signal devices, and notebooks containing what investigators described as concerning statements. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's office declined to comment on the nature of the statements.

Charges and court proceedings

Taele is charged in a federal criminal complaint with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, a felony carrying a statutory maximum of 10 years in federal prison. He also faces charges in Los Angeles Superior Court: a misdemeanour for carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and two felony counts for possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun and for the manufacture, importation or sale of a large-capacity magazine. He pleaded not guilty to all state charges on Monday 4 August, with bail set at $250,000. He was due in federal court on Wednesday 6 August, but the hearing was cancelled and postponed indefinitely. He is being held at a downtown LA jail on state charges and was not yet in federal custody as of the reporting.

Official reactions

First Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli said in a statement:

“While we are still investigating the motives of this individual, we are thankful he was apprehended before the President's visit. Federal and local law enforcement stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring.”

Patrick Grandy, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, said:

“There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump's life, and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, working with our partners at the U.S. Secret Service, the ATF, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, will investigate this case thoroughly.”

Authorities have not presented evidence that Taele was targeting the president. Trump addressed the arrest on Tuesday, telling Fox News that "only consequential presidents" are targeted and that he was "definitely consequential", which he said brought him "a little solace".

Background

The man convicted over the September 2024 incident at Trump International Golf Club, Ryan Routh, was convicted on five counts in September 2025, among them attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, and on 4 February 2026 Judge Aileen Cannon sentenced him to life in prison plus seven years.
