Defensive crisis forces Liverpool's hand

Liverpool announced the season-long loan signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on Monday, August 10, as the club confronts a defensive shortage ahead of their Premier League opener against Newcastle United on August 23. The 27-year-old Uruguayan international arrives as the only fit senior centre-back alongside captain Virgil van Dijk, who at 35 is himself returning from a post-World Cup break. Joe Gomez suffered a muscle injury in Liverpool's opening pre-season match, teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury, and new signing Jérémy Jacquet is nursing a shoulder injury suffered in February that has recently been complicated by a knee issue. The departure of Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid further depleted the ranks.

Deal structure and Araujo's Barcelona exit

Barcelona did not specify the financial details, but Spanish press reported that Liverpool will cover Araujo's wages and hold an option to buy set at €55 million ($63.5 million). British media cited a figure of approximately £47 million. The loan agreement runs until June 30, 2027. Araujo, who is under contract with Barcelona until 2031 after renewing in January 2025, slipped down the pecking order under head coach Hansi Flick. The emergence of Pau Cubarsi, named best young player at the 2026 World Cup, and Gerard Martí reduced his role. Last season, Araujo played just 35 matches across all competitions and took a one-month break in December to preserve his mental health, returning in January to find Eric García and Gerard Martín also ahead of him.

Flick and Araujo on the move

Flick said it was "a pity" he could not include Araujo as much as he would have liked last season, citing tactical differences.

The Ronald is a great kid, a fantastic player and a great captain. Our style is a bit different [from his], but he is a very fast and strong player, and quite skilful with the ball.

Araujo, who joined Barcelona's B team in 2018 from Boston River and was promoted to the first team in the 2020/21 season, said the transfer came together quickly.

It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.

He was part of Uruguay's squad at the 2026 World Cup but did not feature due to a muscular issue, and has 27 international caps.

Pre-season concerns under Iraola

Liverpool's new manager Andoni Iraola, who joined in June after Arne Slot was sacked, has seen his side squander a two-goal lead in consecutive friendlies. After losing 4-2 to Leeds United earlier in August, Liverpool fell 3-2 to Monaco at Anfield on Sunday, August 9, having led 2-0. Van Dijk, goalkeeper Alisson Becker, and winger Cody Gakpo were all making their first appearances since the World Cup.

We played really good (in the) first half, especially the first 30 minutes, but right now probably we don't have much more in terms of the level required to play like this.

Iraola said the returning World Cup players lack the energy for 90 minutes and need more training. He also confirmed a cautious approach with Jacquet, whose recovery is taking longer than expected.

Van Dijk looks ahead

Van Dijk, who played almost an hour against Monaco in his first pre-season appearance, welcomed Araujo and indicated more arrivals could follow before the September 1 transfer deadline. Liverpool are keen to strengthen their forward line, with Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola of interest.
