Ararat-Armenia beats Universitatea Craiova 1-0 to secure Europa League berth

Decisive stoppage time penalty in Yerevan

Universitatea Craiova exited the Europa League play-off round following a 1-0 defeat to Ararat-Armenia at the Republican Stadium Vazgen Sargsyan in Yerevan on 27 August 2026. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Ion Oblemenco stadium, the tie remained scoreless through normal regulation time in the second leg before resolving in stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, Carlos Mora conceded a foul against Balanta inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a penalty to the host team. Goalkeeper Laurentiu Popescu stopped Sandro Lima's initial spot kick in the 95th minute. However, the Lithuanian referee ordered a retake after video assistant referee review confirmed that Craiova defender Oleksandr Romanchuk entered the penalty area before the kick and cleared the ball into touch. Lima took the second kick in the 98th minute, which Popescu parried once again into the six-yard box, allowing the Brazilian forward to convert the rebound.

The Romanian side created several scoring opportunities across both halves but failed to beat Ararat-Armenia goalkeeper Bravim. Craiova maintained offensive pressure in the second half, with Samuel Teles failing to convert a one-on-one opportunity against Bravim in the 82nd minute and Mora shooting off target in the 84th minute. We were the better team on the pitch, we created many chances to score. We showed a lot of personality, we played well, but we lacked the most important thing in football, the goal. Football is unfair sometimes, but I do not want to say whether it was a matter of luck or bad luck. We were not efficient, even though we had chances.

Managerial scrutiny and coaching transition talks

The aggregate 2-1 defeat placed head coach Filipe Coelho under immediate scrutiny despite winning the domestic league title with Craiova in the previous campaign. Former Craiova player Gica Craioveanu criticised Coelho's tactical choices on Digi Sport, specifically questioning the deployment of three central defenders against an opponent fielding a single forward. Club executives have begun evaluating a potential change on the coaching bench, identifying former Romania national team manager Edi Iordanescu as their primary target. Iordanescu has been without a club since his four-month tenure at Legia Warsaw concluded, having previously managed Romania between 2022 and 2024. If discussions with Iordanescu fail to yield an agreement, Craiova plans to consider alternative foreign coaching candidates.

Transition to Conference League group stage

Following their elimination from the Europa League play-offs, Universitatea Craiova transitions directly into the main league stage of the UEFA Conference League under UEFA regulations for the 2026–2027 season. The Romanian club enters the competition for the second consecutive year, having also reached the Conference League during the previous campaign. The league stage features six fixtures scheduled to begin on 15 October 2026. Craiova entered the tournament draw scheduled for 28 August 2026 in Monte Carlo at 14:00 local time, where clubs are drawn against opponents selected across six seeding pots.
