Kimi Antonelli wins inaugural Madrid Grand Prix to extend Formula 1 championship lead

Strategic turning point at the Madrid circuit

The 57-lap race at the newly opened Madrid circuit altered direction on lap 14 when Lance Stroll stopped on track, prompting a Virtual Safety Car period. Antonelli, who started from second on the grid, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen took immediate pit stops to change tyres with minimal time loss on a track where overtaking proved difficult. McLaren's Lando Norris, who had led from pole position by more than six seconds, had already passed the pit lane entrance and could not pit during the neutralised phase. Norris entered the pits on lap 16 under green-flag conditions, where a seven-second stop caused by a jammed wheel dropped him to fifth position.

Podium battle and opening-lap dispute

Antonelli managed the remainder of the Grand Prix to finish 4.3 seconds clear of Verstappen, while Norris recovered through the field to finish third, 0.7 seconds behind the Red Bull driver. Verstappen had started from third on the grid and ran wide off track at turn two while fighting Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies instructed Verstappen to cede positions to Antonelli and Hamilton to avoid a potential five- or ten-second penalty from race stewards. Verstappen complied despite vocal disagreement over the team radio, later overtaking Hamilton before the British driver retired due to brake failure. Verstappen earned Driver of the Day honours after defending second place from Norris until the chequered flag.

It's good that we won, but I don't feel as good as usual, because I believe that Lando deserved the victory.

Top ten classification and championship gap

Charles Leclerc held the race lead for an extended stint by delaying his tyre change in anticipation of a safety car or red flag stoppage. The Monegasque driver finally pitted ten laps before the finish, rejoining the track to finish fourth for Ferrari. George Russell crossed the line in fifth place in the second Mercedes car, while Liam Lawson took sixth for Red Bull as a replacement for the injured Isack Hadjar. Franco Colapinto scored seventh for Alpine, followed by Oscar Piastri in eighth for McLaren, Arvid Lindblad in ninth for Racing Bulls, and Nico Hülkenberg in tenth for Audi.

Standings heading into Baku

The result marked Antonelli's eighth win across 14 rounds of the 2026 season. Antonelli now leads the Drivers' Championship with 292 points, opening an 81-point margin over teammate Russell on 211 points. Hamilton sits third in the standings with 191 points, followed by Norris on 186, Leclerc on 167, and Verstappen on 145. In the Constructors' Championship, Mercedes leads with 503 points, followed by Ferrari with 358 points, McLaren with 306, and Red Bull Racing with 230 points. The next round of the championship takes place at the Baku City Circuit for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 24 to 26 September.
