Amazon expands AWS supply chain deal with Kühne+Nagel and secures seven-year share option
Kühne+Nagel has entered a long-term strategic partnership to manage cloud infrastructure logistics for Amazon Web Services, granting Amazon stock options tied to multi-year milestones.
Expansion of cloud infrastructure logistics
Swiss logistics group Kühne+Nagel has signed a long-term strategic partnership with Amazon to manage global logistics for Amazon Web Services data centres. Founded in Bremen in 1890, the Swiss transport multinational operates across international ocean, air, and road freight markets. The new agreement covers end-to-end supply chain services for cloud computing infrastructure, including facility construction, site commissioning, routine maintenance, modernization, and future expansions. Kühne+Nagel will deploy air and ocean transport networks to move critical equipment, particularly artificial intelligence server components shipped from manufacturing hubs in Asia to data centres worldwide. Amazon currently ranks as the Schindellegi-based forwarder's largest individual customer. Kühne+Nagel chief executive Stefan Paul described the corporate alignment in a company statement on Monday.
With our global network, our digital capabilities and our supply chain expertise, we are in an excellent position to support the evolving business requirements and growth plans of Amazon.
Revenue prospects and equity options
The expanded agreement is expected to significantly increase annual revenue between the two companies. Kühne+Nagel currently generates sales in the high three-digit millions of dollars annually from its Amazon account, with corporate insiders projecting the new deal could lift annual turnover to several billion dollars. In parallel with commercial services, the agreement grants Amazon call options on Kühne+Nagel shares exercisable over a seven-year timeline. The exercise of these options remains contingent on Amazon meeting agreed commercial volume thresholds and service milestones. Amazon holds the right to settle the options in cash or through shares, with market estimates indicating any equity stake will remain below Switzerland's 3% mandatory disclosure threshold. Kühne+Nagel engaged an external financial service provider to hedge its treasury stock exposure, neutralizing balance sheet risk.

Tech competition for data centre supply chains
Hyperscale cloud providers, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet, have accelerated capital deployment into data centre construction across North America and international markets to satisfy computing requirements for artificial intelligence applications. The logistics agreement reflects a broader procurement strategy by Amazon to secure dedicated infrastructure capacity through long-term partner commitments. In early September 2026, Amazon finalized a semiconductor partnership valued at up to $60 billion with Qualcomm for custom AI processors, accompanied by a $4 billion equity warrant. Kühne+Nagel already provides cloud infrastructure logistics to Alphabet's Google Cloud division. Luzerner Kantonalbank analyst Marco Estermann noted that securing AWS confirms the forwarder possesses a scalable operating framework for complex data centre supply chains.
Market reaction and corporate restructuring
Shares in Kühne+Nagel rose between 4% and 5.8% during morning trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange following the announcement on 21 September 2026. The stock movement coincided with the scheduled quarterly rebalancing of the Swiss Market Index, which saw Kühne+Nagel and telecoms operator Swisscom exit the 20-member benchmark index to make room for healthcare companies Galderma and Sandoz. The agreement with Amazon is the first commercial partnership concluded by the logistics group since the death of majority owner Klaus-Michael Kühne (1937–2026). Prior to his death, Kühne arranged the transfer of his controlling stake of approximately 59% in voting rights to the non-profit Kühne-Stiftung. Kühne+Nagel, which reported 24.5 billion Swiss francs in net turnover for the 2025 financial year, plans to scale its specialized technology logistics division over the coming years.
