
Amazon finances largest US gas plant in Texas to power AI data centers
Amazon confirmed on 7 August 2026 that it is financing a giant gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to power three future data centers. The GW Ranch project, with 35 turbines and 7.65 gigawatts of capacity, would be the largest gas plant in the United States and is permitted to emit over 30 million tonnes of greenhouse gases per year.
A giant plant for AI energy demand
Amazon confirmed on 7 August 2026 that it is financing a giant gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to power three future data centers. The project, named GW Ranch, is being developed by Pacifico Energy and will have 35 turbines with a total capacity of 7.65 gigawatts. This would make it more powerful than any gas power plant currently operating in the United States. The plant will not be connected to the public electricity grid, a solution increasingly used by tech giants to satisfy the energy demands of the AI boom.
Satellite analysis and project details
The specialized firm Cleanview used satellite imagery to link the gas plant project to three data center permits filed by Amazon earlier this week in the arid area of Texas near the Mexican border. The plant's planned capacity of 7.65 gigawatts is more than four times the power of the Flamanville EPR nuclear reactor in France. For comparison, the last three German nuclear power plants, which shut down in 2023, each had a capacity of about 1.4 gigawatts.
Environmental impact and emissions
The GW Ranch plant is authorized to emit more than 30 million tonnes of greenhouse gases per year, which would make it the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. While gas plants are less polluting than coal plants, they remain significant sources of emissions responsible for climate change, especially given that natural gas production causes methane leaks, a potent greenhouse gas. These plants also emit toxic gases.
Amazon's response and mitigation plans
Amazon stated that by generating its own electricity, it avoids passing the costs of AI development onto citizens. Household electricity bills in the United States have risen sharply as utilities pass on the costs of building new infrastructure for the AI boom.

The company says the new data center project in Pecos County will be powered by a dedicated plant that will not increase electricity prices for Texas households. Amazon also claims it is exploring possibilities to add solar energy to the site and will use non-potable water to avoid straining the local network. The company maintains its goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2040.
