Allianz drops Madrid festival sponsorship after artist boycott over Israeli bond holdings
German insurer Allianz has suspended its primary sponsorship of Madrid's Festival of Ideas after more than 20 cultural figures threatened a boycott over the company's financial ties to Israel.
Sponsorship withdrawal in Madrid
German financial services corporation Allianz has suspended its primary sponsorship of the Festival of Ideas in Madrid following boycott threats from participating speakers. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, two days before the four-day event was scheduled to open on September 17. The cultural gathering, organized jointly by the Círculo de Bellas Artes and cultural management organization La Fábrica, features more than 100 invited speakers across public spaces and cultural venues in the Spanish capital. Festival co-directors Marcela Vélez and Javier Moscoso confirmed that the organization agreed with Allianz to end the commercial partnership for the event's third edition while maintaining the complete scheduled program.
Boycott campaign and bond allegations
The dispute began early on Tuesday when a group of scheduled participants released a joint manifesto announcing they would put their participation on hold unless organizers severed ties with Allianz. The list of signatories grew to include between 26 and more than 30 cultural figures, including Oscar-nominated film director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, musician Rodrigo Cuevas, author Alana S. Portero, philosopher Paul B. Preciado, and television presenter Inés Hernand. The signatories responded to calls from the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, arguing that Allianz is the largest buyer of Israeli state bonds. The manifesto cited a 2025 United Nations report by Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese titled "From the economy of occupation to the economy of genocide" to assert that the festival should not accept funding from institutions financing Israeli sovereign debt.
Dialogue and diversity of perspectives are core values of Allianz. We firmly reject the accusations made against our company and stand by our responsible business practices.
Financial shortfall for organizers
Allianz stated that its withdrawal was intended to prevent the controversy from diverting attention from the festival's program and public debates. Because the sponsorship funds had already been transferred, the festival organization must return the contribution and absorb the resulting budget deficit directly. Co-director Marcela Vélez stated that replacing the main sponsor within 48 hours was unfeasible, leaving the Círculo de Bellas Artes and La Fábrica to fund all activities, including the primary outdoor stage in Plaza de España.
The contribution was already made and now we will return it. We will assume the large financial hole it creates, because we were not going to cancel the festival.
Political reactions and institutional disputes
Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun commented on the case during an event in Madrid, stating his opposition to the presence of companies linked to Israel in cultural activities. The controversy follows similar disputes in Ireland, where the Gaelic Athletic Association faced protests and a disrupted annual congress in February over its 30-year sponsorship arrangement with Allianz, before GAA leadership voted in August to maintain the contract. The Madrid festival is scheduled to continue through September 20 across sites including the Museo del Prado, the Museo Reina Sofía, and Fundación Telefónica, featuring international guests such as British novelist Zadie Smith and Mexican authors Lydia Cacho and Brenda Navarro.
