All Blacks recall Scott and Beauden Barrett for Eden Park test against Australia
Damian McKenzie will start at flyhalf and veteran Scott Barrett returns to the forward pack as New Zealand prepares to defend its 40-year Eden Park record against Australia on Saturday.
New Zealand reshuffles playmakers amid injury toll
New Zealand head coach Dave Rennie will enter Saturday's opening Bledisloe Cup test against Australia with a depleted squad after injuries forced widespread changes. Flyhalf Richie Mo'unga tore a calf muscle during training on Tuesday, ruling him out of both Saturday's fixture in Auckland and next week's rematch in Sydney. Mo'unga had stepped in after Ruben Love suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Damian McKenzie moves from fullback to start at flyhalf alongside veteran Beauden Barrett, who will make his first start of the year at fullback. With multiple outside backs unavailable through injury and concussion, Will Jordan and Leroy Carter will start on the wings. In midfield, Jordie Barrett partners Quinn Tupaea. Rennie outlined the importance of the fixture when addressing the rivalry.
The Bledisloe Cup means a huge amount to this group. There's a lot of history and pride tied up in it, and every Test against the Wallabies carries real weight for us.
Barrett brothers reunite in revamped forward pack
Former captain Scott Barrett will make his first appearance of the season after undergoing back surgery in May, joining Josh Lord in the second row. His return puts all three Barrett brothers in the starting lineup together for the first time this year. Hooker Codie Taylor retains the captaincy with Ardie Savea sidelined for several months following shoulder surgery. The loose forward trio features Tupou Vaa'i at blindside flanker, Peter Lakai on the openside, and Wallace Sititi at number eight. On the bench, Shannon Frizell is in line for his first test appearance since the 2023 World Cup final.
- Lock Scott Barrett undergoes back surgery.
- Australia defeats South Africa 42-38 in Perth.
- Richie Mo'unga tears a calf muscle during training.
- New Zealand meets Australia at Eden Park in Auckland.
Wallabies maintain consistency under Les Kiss
Australia head coach Les Kiss has opted for stability after going unbeaten in his first five tests. The sole change to the starting side that defeated South Africa 42-38 in Perth brings Queensland Reds midfielder Isaac Henry into outside centre. Henry replaces Hunter Paisami, who received a four-week suspension for a high tackle. Inside centre Len Ikitau passed a fitness test on an ankle injury, shifting inside to accommodate Henry. Kiss retained Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii on the left wing following his aerial display against the Springboks rather than moving him into midfield. With Tom Hooper and Taniela Tupou returning to European clubs, Australia has reconfigured its bench split to five forwards and three backs. Kiss explained his selection strategy ahead of the match.
Keeping consistency in the starting side gives us a solid foundation, while adding some freshness on the bench will provide energy late in the game.

Eden Park fortress faces Australian challenge
The Wallabies will seek to end an 11-match losing streak against New Zealand and a 40-year drought at Eden Park, where the All Blacks remain unbeaten in 53 matches since 1994. New Zealand enters the contest following a 3-1 series loss to South Africa and defends a trophy held since 2002. Rennie dismissed suggestions of personal animosity after his dismissal by Australia eight months before the 2023 World Cup, noting that his squad returns home after eight consecutive matches on the road. Rennie addressed facing his former side.
It's not about me. You know, I've got no regrets. I got to work with some really good people, people I still have a lot of time for. It's just a part of the game that we're involved in.
The two-match Bledisloe Cup series will conclude next week when the teams meet in Sydney.
