Deutsche Bahn to ban alcohol at all 5,400 German train stations by October 2026
The state-owned rail operator will extend a rule currently in force at about 30 large stations to every platform and hall across the country, with enforcement by DB security and federal police.

Deutsche Bahn intends to forbid drinking alcohol at every one of its 5,400 stations across Germany by 15 October 2026. The ban, first reported by Bild and confirmed to dpa, will apply to platforms and station halls, while station restaurants and bars may continue to serve alcohol. Sealed bottles carried in luggage are not covered by the prohibition. The state-owned company is using its house rules to roll out a restriction that until now has been in place at roughly 30 large stations, including Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich.

Why now
The push follows a series of violent incidents against railway staff, some allegedly involving alcohol. Deutsche Bahn points to the experience at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, where a consumption ban introduced in April 2024 produced a measurable drop in conflicts and confrontations. Passenger perceptions of safety improved, and the station required less cleaning, according to an early assessment cited by the company. The nationwide expansion is framed as a security agenda rather than a public-order gesture, with the operator arguing that de-escalation and staff protection require enforceable rules.
## Enforcement DB security personnel and federal police officers will monitor compliance. Anyone caught drinking alcohol outside the permitted gastronomy zones can be ordered to leave the premises immediately. Repeat violations may lead to a permanent house ban, effectively barring the individual from all Deutsche Bahn stations. The local house regulations are to be updated in the coming weeks in coordination with municipalities and authorities, Bild reported.
What stays the same
A general alcohol ban does not yet exist on Deutsche Bahn trains themselves, although smoking is prohibited on board. At stations, smoking remains allowed only in designated areas. The new rule therefore closes a gap between on-platform behaviour and the tighter standards already applied at major hubs, without altering the rules for onboard consumption.
