
Harvard study links top music album release dates to a 15% increase in US fatal car crashes
US traffic deaths rose by an average of 15.1% on days when top-streamed albums debuted between 2017 and 2022, according to Harvard Medical School researchers analyzing Spotify and federal crash data.

A study published in JAMA Network Open by researchers at Harvard Medical School reports an association between the release dates of top-streamed music albums and an increase in fatal motor vehicle collisions across the United States. Led by Dr. Vishal Patel, the investigation evaluated federal crash records from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System alongside Spotify streaming figures between 2017 and 2022. The researchers focused on the ten albums that accumulated the highest single-day streaming totals during that five-year window. After adjusting for days of the week, federal holidays, and seasonal patterns, the analysis calculated a 15.1% relative rise in fatal crashes on release days compared with the ten days before and after. Average daily road fatalities reached 139.1 on launch dates, compared to 120.9 on baseline control days, representing an estimated 182 additional deaths across the ten events.

Streaming volume and driver distraction
National streaming volume for the top 200 songs in the United States increased by 43% on the release dates of the studied albums. Taylor Swift's album Midnights registered 184,695,609 Spotify streams on its debut date of 21 October 2022, the highest single-day total in the five-year dataset. Other albums analyzed by the team included Scorpion by Drake on 29 June 2018 and Harry's House by Harry Styles on 20 May 2022, alongside releases by Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar. Patel explained that public releases present a natural testing window for mobile device distraction across the country.
Album releases give you something closer to an experiment - a day when smartphone use jumps nationally for reasons that have nothing to do with road conditions, weather or who happens to be driving.

Cognitive mechanisms and driver demographics
The observed increase in fatalities was higher among younger motorists, male drivers, and white and Asian individuals. Emilia Redolar, a professor of neuroscience at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, noted that driving relies on the basal nuclei for automated control while the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex manages active attention. Interacting with new audio selections draws executive attention away from the road, creating hazards when drivers navigate phone screens. Patel advised drivers to select their audio tracks before starting their vehicles rather than browsing while moving.

Research limits and artist variance
The authors acknowledged that population-level records do not show whether individual crash victims were actively operating streaming applications or listening to music when collisions occurred. In an accompanying commentary published in the same journal, Donald A. Redelmeier and Jonathan Zipursky of the University of Toronto observed that minor attention lapses at speeds of nearly 100 kilometres per hour can produce fatal collisions. They cautioned, however, that the model cannot forecast exact fatality shifts for future album releases. They cited disparate figures within the same artist's catalog, noting that Drake's 2021 release Certified Lover Boy saw an 8% rise in extra road fatalities, whereas his 2022 album Her Loss saw a 67% increase.
