Driver arrested in Albufeira after injuring 12 people in nightlife pedestrian zone

At approximately 03:00 on Tuesday morning, 25 August 2026, a vehicle began moving from a parked position and breached physical barriers on Rua Júlio Dinis in Albufeira. The driver bypassed street closures that restrict vehicular access to the pedestrian-heavy nightlife zone of Rua da Oura. When two officers from the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) attempted to intercept the car, the motorist reversed direction and drove the wrong way. A second police patrol ordered the driver to halt, but the vehicle accelerated toward crowds of pedestrians and the police perimeter. GNR officers fired two warning shots into the air to alert pedestrians and stop the advancing car. The vehicle struck multiple people before colliding with another car, after which the driver attempted to escape on foot. Officers from the Public Order Intervention Group intercepted and detained him at the scene.

Casualties and emergency response

The collision injured 12 people, comprising ten civilians aged between 18 and 22 years and two GNR officers. Most of the injured victims hold Portuguese nationality. Emergency medical responders dispatched 58 personnel supported by 13 vehicles to the scene following the initial emergency alert registered at 03:13. Paramedics transported the injured to the Portimão and Faro hospitals as well as the Albufeira Health Centre. A 21-year-old woman sustained severe injuries and was admitted to the Hospital de Portimão. While regional health officials initially noted that two patients required extended inpatient care in Portimão, GNR officials later confirmed that all other injured individuals, including both military officers, were discharged after receiving treatment for minor wounds.

Driver testing and criminal charges

The 35-year-old driver was on holiday in the Algarve and was the sole occupant of the vehicle during the incident. Following his arrest, breathalyser testing showed a blood alcohol content of 1.29 grams per litre, which exceeds the legal threshold and constitutes a criminal offence under Portuguese law. Medical staff also collected blood samples to screen for psychotropic substances. Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage from surrounding establishments to reconstruct the vehicle's trajectory. The driver apologized for his actions following his arrest but offered no explanation for disobeying police orders. Authorities charged him with qualified offences against physical integrity, driving under the influence of alcohol, and dangerous driving ahead of his court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.

Municipal and government reaction

Albufeira Mayor Rui Cristina stated that the municipality had deployed its Noite Segura security protocol, which maintains active teams from the Portuguese Red Cross, municipal firefighters, and the GNR in high-traffic nightlife areas.

There was total disrespect for the physically implemented barriers and for the security forces.

Cristina classified the collision as an isolated incident, noting that the municipality is coordinating medical and social assistance for the victims and their families. Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves expressed solidarity with the injured GNR officers and the young victims, acknowledging the rapid intervention of law enforcement units on site.
