In brief
Airbnb's Q3 2026 shareholder letter, released on 5 November 2026, says the agent will build trip-planning screens from a library of hundreds of travel components and launch in the first half of 2027.
Third-quarter revenue rose 19% to $4.9bn, the fastest growth in more than three years, with net income of $1.9bn and nights and seats booked up 16%.
The quarterly filing discloses that the lab paid Airbnb $7.1M for some intellectual property and certain expenses, under a deal signed this month and approved by independent directors.
Ahmad Al-Dahle, who joined Airbnb in January from Meta, holds a stake in the AI lab and works for it, according to the filing.

Agent built from travel components
Airbnb said in its third-quarter shareholder letter, released on Thursday, 5 November 2026, that it will roll out an AI agent for planning and booking trips in the first half of 2027. The company argues that general-purpose agents handle simple chores such as a restaurant booking or an appointment, but that planning a trip needs a different approach. Rather than a text conversation, the tool would build a screen around each question from a library of hundreds of travel components, including maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries. Users would be able to act inside that same experience, and the company wants the agent to eventually cover homes, hotels, services and experiences in one place.
Why Chesky wants a purpose-built tool
Chesky told analysts on the earnings call that people will not use one AI agent for everything, and he framed the planning stage as part of the appeal.
“Travel is aspirational. Discovering where to go and where to stay is part of the experience.”
He added that 80% of travellers say they enjoy researching trips, and that people want to look at photos, compare homes and decide together with their companions. Chesky said general-purpose agents are not the best tool for that work, which is why Airbnb is building its own.
Quarterly results and forecast
Revenue rose 19% to $4.9bn in the third quarter, the fastest growth in more than three years, while net income reached $1.9bn. Nights and seats booked increased 16%. Airbnb now expects revenue to grow in the high teens this year, compared with at least the mid-teens in its earlier outlook, and it authorised up to $12bn more in share buybacks. The company had last raised its forecast in August, and Chesky said hotels, which Airbnb began adding this year, grew markedly faster than homes in the quarter.

Shares rose more than 10% on Friday, 6 November, a move that set Airbnb apart from Booking, Expedia and Tripadvisor. Those three rivals had pointed to higher airfares linked to the Iran war and to unrest in parts of Europe.
Deal with Chesky's AI lab
The filing shows that the AI lab founded and controlled by Chesky paid Airbnb $7.1M for some intellectual property and to cover certain expenses. Under an agreement signed this month, Airbnb may choose to join the lab's future funding rounds, and it obtains a licence to use some of the lab's technology. Chief technology officer Ahmad Al-Dahle holds a stake in the lab and also works for it. Al-Dahle joined Airbnb in January from Meta, where he led generative AI.
A special committee of independent board members approved the transaction under Airbnb's related-party policy. The filing leaves the lab unnamed and says nothing about what it is developing. The Information reported that Chesky has so far funded the lab himself, a claim that rests on one unnamed source and has not been independently confirmed.
“Their roles with the AI Lab do not change their duties and responsibilities to Airbnb.”
What comes next
Airbnb plans to begin rolling out the agent in the first half of 2027. Its existing AI tools include AI search, which accepts natural-language questions, and AI-written descriptions for listings. The letter also says AI has changed how the company develops products and runs its operations. Chesky said the agent should feel a little bit like generative UI, offering the right interface at the right time.
