Romanian radar detects aerial targets near Ukraine border, triggering air alert in Tulcea

Radar detection near the Ukrainian border

On Sunday, 19 July 2026, at 13:19 local time, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MApN) surveillance radar system detected a group of aerial targets approximately 15 kilometres east of the Ukrainian town of Vâlcove. The location is just across the border from Tulcea county, a region that forms part of the Danube Delta and has been on heightened alert since the outbreak of war in neighbouring Ukraine. The National Military Command Centre (nucleu) was immediately notified and began tracking the objects. The targets were monitored continuously but did not enter Romanian airspace. The detection triggered standard alert procedures under Romania's air defence protocol, which includes notifying civil protection agencies.

Emergency alert sent to residents

At 13:57, 38 minutes after the radar detection, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) issued a RO-Alert message to mobile phones in the northern part of Tulcea county. The message warned residents of a possible air threat and advised them to follow official guidance. RO-Alert is Romania's public warning system, used for emergencies including extreme weather, floods, and air incidents. Local authorities in communes such as Chilia Veche and Sulina were placed on standby. No evacuation orders were given, and the population was urged to remain indoors if they heard unusual sounds. The alert covered a sparsely populated area near the border, where many residents are familiar with such warnings due to the proximity of the conflict.

No unauthorized penetrations into national airspace or cases of ground impact by any aerial vehicle were reported.

Alert lifted and situation normalised

The air alert was lifted at 14:34, exactly 75 minutes after the initial radar detection. MApN confirmed that the aerial targets had moved away from the border area and no longer posed a threat. The ministry stated that its radar systems continued to scan the airspace and that no further suspicious activity was detected. The quick resolution of the alert was attributed to the coordinated response between military and civil protection agencies. Residents were informed via a follow-up message that the danger had passed. No damage or injuries were reported on Romanian territory.

Ongoing monitoring and allied coordination

MApN emphasised that it permanently monitors the airspace and maintains real-time communication with allied structures. The ministry did not specify the nature of the aerial targets, but the incident occurred against the backdrop of ongoing military activity in Ukraine. Romania, a NATO member, has increased its air surveillance along the eastern border since the start of the war. The ministry reiterated its commitment to transparency and public safety, noting that all such events are reported to allied partners. The alert on Sunday was one of several similar incidents in the region over the past year, though most have not resulted in airspace violations.
