Fire at two workshops in Elaionas, Aigaleo, brought under control on Saturday afternoon
Firefighters brought the blaze on Agiou Pantaleimonos Street under control shortly before 16:00 on Saturday, after a preventive evacuation within 400 metres and reports of explosions before the fire broke out.
The blaze at the dye house
A fire broke out at a clothing dye house on Agiou Pantaleimonos Street in Elaionas, Aigaleo, half an hour after midnight according to early reports. The flames spread to the neighbouring clothing workshop, and the dye house was completely burned. Witnesses reported explosions before the fire started, and ERT reported that gas cylinders were stored inside the premises. Fire services said the high heat load caused serious damage to both buildings. Two propane tanks on the roof posed no danger, according to the fire service.
Firefighting and evacuation
Early reports cited 18 firefighters with six to seven vehicles at the scene, while a later count put 16 firefighters with seven vehicles on site until dawn. By Saturday morning, 35 firefighters with 11 vehicles and a special aerial vehicle for dousing the roof were deployed. The Aigaleo municipality supplied water tankers to help. Residents within 400 metres of the buildings were moved away with the help of the Hellenic Police. Traffic on Agiou Pantaleimonos Street was halted from the height of Iera Odos, and a DEDDIE crew cut the electricity to the building for safety reasons.
