Japanese MotoGP rider Ai Ogura underwent surgery in Barcelona on Thursday morning after fracturing the thumb on his left hand during a motocross training session in Japan. The operation was performed by Dr. Xavier Mir, who stabilized the fracture by inserting an internal plate. Ogura, who rides for the American Trackhouse Aprilia satellite squad, sustained the injury shortly before travelling to Spain for round twelve of the championship. The medical staff plans to conduct a detailed evaluation of the injured hand over the weekend before establishing a structured physical rehabilitation program. The injury and subsequent operation have ruled the Japanese rider out of this weekend's Aragon Grand Prix at the MotorLand Aragon circuit in Alcaniz.

Ogura's title campaign and podium run

The forced absence interrupts a breakthrough 2026 campaign in which Ogura emerged as a challenger in only his second season in the premier class. In late June, the Japanese rider secured his maiden MotoGP victory at the Dutch Grand Prix in the Netherlands. He followed that win with three additional podium finishes during the European phase of the season, taking third place in France and finishing second in both the Czech Republic and Germany. With ten races remaining on the 2026 schedule, missing the Aragon round threatens Ogura's position in the championship standings as rival riders look to capitalize on his absence.

Championship standings before Aragon

Ogura sits third in the MotoGP world championship standings on 203 points, trailing championship leader Jorge Martin of Aprilia Racing by 37 points. Martin leads the title race with 240 points, while his factory teammate Marco Bezzecchi occupies second place with 209 points. Just behind Ogura, Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez holds fourth place with 200 points, followed closely by Pertamina VR46 Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio in fifth place with 199 points. Only 41 points separate the top five riders heading into the race weekend at MotorLand Aragon.

Rival contenders at MotorLand Aragon

The close point margins place pressure on the chasing pack, where Di Giannantonio sits one point behind Marquez and four points behind Ogura. The Italian rider, who will move to the factory KTM team in 2027, took victory at the Catalan Grand Prix in a race disrupted by two red flags, delivering the first MotoGP win for the VR46 team. Di Giannantonio also collected three podiums and two pole positions this year, though a fall in Germany dropped him from third to fifth. Speaking before the Aragon weekend, Di Giannantonio outlined his preparations following the two-week pause in the racing calendar.

Recovery timeline and San Marino target

Trackhouse Aprilia has set its sights on the San Marino Grand Prix at the Misano World Circuit, which begins in 15 days, as a potential target for Ogura's return to competition. Team principal Davide Brivio noted that confirming his availability remains premature until the medical staff assesses the post-operative healing of the thumb over the coming days.

Although we hope Ai will be able to take part in the San Marino Grand Prix, which starts in 15 days, it is too early to confirm that right now. Our goal, our wish, is of course for him to be back in Misano, but we will have to see how the situation develops.

The assessment scheduled for the weekend will determine whether Ogura can begin physical training and travel to Italy for the Misano race.
