AI-generated actress Tilly Norwood to star in first feature film 'Misaligned'
Particle6 announces comedy-drama 'Misaligned' starring its controversial virtual creation, reigniting debate over AI in filmmaking.
The announcement
London-based AI studio Particle6 revealed on 6 July 2026 that its virtual creation Tilly Norwood will lead the feature film 'Misaligned'. The project is in early development with key collaborators being attached, and no release date or distribution details have been shared. A spokesperson told AFP it was too early to discuss cinema or streaming plans.
The plot
'Misaligned' is billed as a comedy-drama coming-of-age story set inside the 'Tillyverse', a surreal digital world in the cloud. Tilly, an AI being with no physical body, childhood or lived experience, only has access to everyone else's. The synopsis says a seductive rogue bot from the dark web convinces her to abandon her guardrails and develop desires, impulses and ambitions, making her more human. As she becomes terrifyingly human, her fame grows and she develops shame that her existence is built on all of humanity.
The film will absolutely be funny, chaotic and self-aware -- very Tilly. But underneath it, there's something deeper about identity, performance, and our very human fears around AI.
The controversy
Norwood first appeared in a July 2025 promotional video and drew industry anger when van der Velden said she wanted the AI to be the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman and sought talent agency representation. SAG-AFTRA issued a statement insisting creativity must remain human-centred and opposing the replacement of human performers with synthetic ones. Actor Melissa Barrera wrote on social media: "Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$. How gross, read the room."
Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$. How gross, read the room.
Hybrid production
Particle6 says the film will combine traditional film and TV professionals (directors, writers, editors) with AI specialists. Van der Velden stated that AI can support premium narrative filmmaking only with substantial human craft, skill, judgement and time. The studio claims to have retrained and upskilled more than 30 creatives and will embed AI training into the production itself.
Our ambition with Tilly Norwood has always been to show the creative industry what is possible with AI at any one point in time.
Previous reception
In March 2026, Particle6 released a music video 'Take The Lead' starring Norwood. It attracted fewer than 400,000 views and drew almost exclusively negative comments on YouTube. The Independent described it as "abysmal slop". The film announcement arrives months after that reception and the earlier Hollywood backlash.
