Stage roots and television debut
Born in Berlin on 1 June 1960, Hoppe studied acting from 1982 to 1986 at the Hochschule fuer Musik und Theater in Hannover. During his training, he appeared on stage at the Staatstheater Hannover before joining various theater ensembles across Berlin in the early 1990s. Between 1990 and 1992, he performed at the Theater des Westens in Tommy Tune's Grand Hotel and Helmut Baumann's Sweet Charity. He subsequently worked at the Grips-Theater until 1995, appearing in Hermann Vinck's Heimatlos and productions directed by Wolfgang Kolneder. From 1995 to 1996, he performed at the Theater an der Parkaue. Hoppe moved into television in 1994, filming 60 episodes of the RTL series Notaufnahme alongside co-star Katy Karrenbauer.
Over two decades in Tatort Ludwigshafen
Hoppe joined the cast of Tatort in 1996, making his debut as Detective Mario Kopper in the SWR episode Der kalte Tod. Working alongside Ulrike Folkerts, who played Chief Inspector Lena Odenthal, Hoppe formed a central partnership in the Ludwigshafen-set series for 21 years. Over that span, he appeared in 57 episodes before leaving the production in early 2018 with the episode Tatort: Kopper. Broadcaster SWR described Hoppe as approachable, credible, and an artist with his heart in the right place.

Katy Karrenbauer also paid tribute on social media, recalling their 60 episodes together on Notaufnahme and noting that the two remained in regular contact over the following decades. Hoppe's management agency noted his continuing energy, curiosity, and forward-looking plans across his career.
