Three cars crash on Romania's A2 motorway: two children injured, 7 km traffic jam
A three-vehicle collision on the Bucharest-Constanța motorway injured a 5-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy and blocked traffic, creating a 7-kilometer queue towards the Black Sea coast on Saturday, 11 July.
A multi-vehicle crash on the A2 "Sun" motorway in Romania left two minors injured and triggered a seven-kilometre tailback on the main route to the seaside during the peak summer weekend.
The crash
The accident occurred at kilometre 160 of the A2, near the town of Cernavodă, on the lane towards Constanța. Three passenger cars collided, and all nine occupants were involved. The impact caused the immediate halt of traffic while emergency crews worked at the scene. Infotrafic from the Romanian General Police Inspectorate confirmed that the collision blocked the carriageway, and the queue of vehicles heading towards the coast built steadily.
Casualties
Emergency teams from ISU Constanța identified two conscious minor victims among the nine people in the vehicles.
Two conscious minor victims were identified (5-year-old female and 16-year-old male) out of 9 persons involved.
The 5-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy received first aid on site and were later transported together with their relatives to the Emergency Department in Cernavodă by SMURD and county ambulance service (SAJ) vehicles. Authorities had not announced any life-threatening condition by the time the road was cleared.
Traffic disruption
Police stopped all traffic during the intervention, and later restricted movement only to the first lane. Even after the damaged cars were removed and both lanes fully reopened, the congestion persisted. The Infotrafic centre reported a column of vehicles stretching approximately 7 kilometres in the direction of Constanța. Summer weekends routinely bring high traffic volumes on the A2 as holidaymakers head for the Black Sea resorts.
Police warnings
Traffic police issued a series of recommendations to drivers on the motorway: to exercise maximum caution, to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, to avoid using the emergency lane, and to refrain from risky overtaking especially where traffic slows abruptly.
