Russia says it downed 635 Ukrainian drones overnight; at least 14 killed in cross-border strikes

Overnight drone barrage

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on the state-controlled messaging platform Max that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 635 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones during the night of 2–3 August. The drones were downed over several Russian regions and annexed Crimea, according to the ministry. The scale of the overnight operation marked one of the highest single-night drone interception totals reported by Moscow since the start of the full-scale war more than four years ago.

Casualties in Russia

The Ukrainian strikes killed nine people across three Russian regions. In the northern republic of Udmurtia, a civilian car was struck, leaving three dead and two wounded, including a child. Regional authorities denounced the attack, saying, “It is a monstrous act in its absurdity: these people certainly did not constitute a military target.” In Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine and is frequently targeted, rockets hit a farm, killing three men and injuring three others. A 13-year-old girl also died near a playground, according to acting governor Alexander Shuvayev. In Saratov region, governor Roman Busargin confirmed two fatalities from a drone strike.

Ukrainian casualties

Russian strikes killed five people in eastern and southern Ukraine. Two people died in Dnipropetrovsk region, and at least one person was killed in each of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, regional authorities said. In Kharkiv region, a Russian strike destroyed a sorting center operated by the postal company Nova Poshta, killing one employee. The attacks came hours after a Russian ballistic missile barrage on Kyiv and its surrounding region overnight Friday to Saturday killed at least 10 people.

Escalation and context

Both sides have sharply increased long-range strikes in recent weeks, causing a rising civilian toll. Ukraine has repeatedly hit refineries, fuel depots, warehouses of the e-commerce giant Wildberries, and cargo ships in the Black Sea. Russia continues its aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities. Both militaries maintain they do not target civilians. On the ground, the front line in the Donbas industrial region remains largely static, with both armies fighting for control of the remaining towns.

Diplomatic stalemate

US-led diplomatic mediation efforts have been at a standstill since late February. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Western nations to provide more air defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities. The stalled talks and intensifying air war come as the conflict enters its fifth year.
