Captains Luke Donald and Jim Furyk launch 2027 Ryder Cup preparations at Adare Manor
Ryder Cup captains Luke Donald and Jim Furyk met in Limerick to mark the countdown to the 2027 centenary match at Adare Manor, addressing crowd conduct and past American form.
Preparations in Limerick
European captain Luke Donald and United States captain Jim Furyk appeared together at Adare Manor in County Limerick on Tuesday to mark the countdown to the 2027 Ryder Cup. The centenary edition of the biennial matchplay event will take place between September 17 and September 19, 2027, on the course owned by Irish businessman JP McManus. Donald, who led Europe to victory in Rome in 2023 and retained the trophy with a 15-13 win at Bethpage Black in 2025, aims to become the first captain from either side to win three consecutive matches. Furyk, appointed for a second term after leading the American team in France in 2018, visited the region alongside Donald, taking part in community events including a youth golf session at Rathbane Golf Club.
Underdog status and team records
During the joint press conference, Furyk placed the underdog label on the United States, citing a 34-year drought on European soil dating back to their 1993 victory at The Belfry. The United States has lost seven consecutive away matches in Europe, while European teams have consistently utilized home course setups to counter American ranking advantages. Furyk noted that Donald and vice-captain Edoardo Molinari will again manage course conditions to favor the European squad. Donald dismissed European complacency, pointing to the American squad's 17-13 Presidents Cup victory at Medinah, where the United States mounted a 9.5-2.5 singles session to overcome a three-point deficit.
We haven't won here in 34 years. It's going to be a home course, home-field advantage. I know what we're stacked up against, and I truly mean it. I truly feel like we're the underdogs. I'm not playing a card.

Addressing crowd conduct after Bethpage
Both captains addressed spectator behavior following incidents at Bethpage Black in September 2025, where European players, including Rory McIlroy, faced hostile crowds. Daily attendance at Adare Manor will reach an estimated 50,000 spectators across the three days of competition. Donald recalled his experience playing in the 2006 Ryder Cup at The K Club, the only previous contest held in Ireland, expressing confidence that Irish fans will maintain sportsmanship while providing vocal support. Furyk confirmed that the PGA of America implemented procedural steps to prevent future misconduct, adding that he expects an energetic European crowd modeled on football chants.
For me, it's certainly my responsibility as the home captain to play this Ryder Cup in the right spirit, and that's what, certainly, in conjunction with Jim and their team, we'll want to do. We want the best team to win on the golf course.
Alternate-shot adjustments
Furyk also confronted the persistent American deficit in foursomes play, where the United States has compiled a 3-13 record over the last two Ryder Cups and an 11-21 record across the last four editions. Across the last four combined Ryder and Presidents Cups, European and International sides have outscored the Americans 26-8 in alternate shot. Furyk stated that these results reflect structural issues rather than statistical anomalies, confirming plans to revise American preparation and player pairings. The American captain also stated he is willing to reconcile with Patrick Reed before the 2027 matches, following disagreements that originated during the 2018 contest in Paris.
