Australia prepares for expanded 2027 Rugby World Cup as ticket sales pass 1.25 million
Organisers have sold over 1.25 million tickets for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, which will feature 24 teams across seven cities starting in October 2027.
Tournament preparations and ticket sales
One year remains until the 2027 Rugby World Cup begins in Australia, with the final batch of tickets going on general sale on Thursday. The expanded tournament will feature 24 teams competing across seven host cities in 52 matches over 44 days. Organisers report that more than half of the 2.5 million tickets have already been sold, with overseas purchasers accounting for 43% of sales. Pre-sale figures surpassed 750,000 purchases across 135 countries, led by supporters from Australia, Britain, New Zealand, Japan, and France. World Rugby chairman Brett Robinson pointed to the strong ticket uptake as a sign of global anticipation.
It's going to be a party like nothing on Earth.
Expanded format and pool fixtures
The 11th edition of the competition introduces a 24-team structure divided into six pools of four teams. The top two sides from each pool and the four best third-placed finishers will advance to a newly created round of 16, replacing the previous 20-team format that used four pools of five. Australia will open the tournament in Perth against Pool A debutants Hong Kong China, in a group that also features New Zealand and Chile. Defending champions South Africa will start their Pool B campaign against Italy at the Adelaide Oval before facing Georgia and Romania. France will begin Pool E against the United States in Melbourne before travelling to Brisbane and Sydney for matches against Japan and Samoa. Stadium Australia in Sydney will host the final on 13 November 2027.

Australia form and team development
Australia enters the one-year countdown ranked sixth globally under head coach Les Kiss, rising from a program-low 10th following their pool-stage exit at the 2023 tournament. The Wallabies have established a five-match unbeaten run that included a series victory in Argentina and a 42-38 victory over South Africa in Perth. Lock Jeremy Williams stated that the squad carries sufficient belief and internal culture to challenge for the trophy on home soil.
The team we've got, the players, coaching staff, and the drive, the care that we have for each other and playing for that Wallaby jersey... I'd back us in every day of the week.
Kiss's side faces an immediate test against New Zealand at Eden Park, where the All Blacks have gone undefeated in 53 Tests since 1994. Former Wallaby Tim Horan noted that any of the world's top 10 sides have an opportunity to compete for the title.
International contenders and player prospects
Contenders across both hemispheres are using the upcoming international calendar to finalise squad selections before the tournament. Pool D will bring together Ireland, Scotland, Uruguay, and Portugal, while England meets Wales, Tonga, and Zimbabwe in Pool F. Scotland flanker Liam McConnell noted that establishing himself against top opposition during autumn tests against New Zealand, Australia, and Japan is required before targeting a tournament squad place.
I doubt you'd maybe go to a World Cup if you didn't play a single Six Nations match, or against a tier one country, so I think I'd have to do that first.
South Africa approaches the tournament on solid form following a 3-1 series victory over New Zealand in September, though head coach Rassie Erasmus noted that previous tournaments demonstrate the risk of unexpected group-stage results.
