DNA breakthrough leads to arrest in 1994 Sieradz forest murder after 32 years
A 50-year-old man has been arrested for the 1994 murder of an unidentified man found buried in a forest near Sieradz, Poland, after new DNA testing of evidence stored for three decades.
Discovery of the body
On 14 January 1994, a partially buried body was discovered in a forest in Sieradz county, Łódź voivodeship. The victim, an unidentified man, had been murdered and his body concealed under forest litter. Investigators secured forensic traces and the victim's clothing, but the initial investigation failed to identify the victim or the perpetrator. The case went cold for nearly three decades.
Reopening and DNA analysis
In December 2023, the District Prosecutor's Office in Sieradz took over the dormant case. The prosecutor ordered a fresh review of the evidence, including the victim's clothing that had been stored in the evidence warehouse. Biological material was collected from the garments for genetic testing. Over the course of the investigation, six expert opinions were prepared by the Institute of Forensic Genetics in Bydgoszcz and the Prof. Jan Sehn Institute of Forensic Research in Kraków. The advanced DNA analysis successfully isolated a profile of an individual linked to the crime.

Facial reconstruction and public appeal
In April 2026, experts from the Kraków institute used the victim's skull and phenotypic data encoded in the DNA to create a facial reconstruction. The image was published in the media, accompanied by a review of dozens of missing persons cases from the early 1990s. Investigators determined that the victim may have been in the Brodnica county area in the final weeks of his life. The public appeal did not immediately yield an identification.
Arrest of the suspect
On 23 July 2026, officers from the Łódź "Archive X" cold case unit, acting on the prosecutor's orders, arrested a 50-year-old man from Brodnica county. He is suspected of committing the murder in 1993, when he was 17 years old. At the time of his arrest, the man was hiding in a forest, wanted for a separate crime: a particularly audacious burglary in early July 2026 that caused losses of nearly 150,000 PLN. Police from the Brodnica district headquarters assisted in locating him.
Court detention and suspect's background
On 25 July 2026, the District Court in Sieradz granted the prosecutor's request and placed the suspect in pre-trial detention for three months. The man has a prior criminal record, having been convicted multiple times for violent crimes against life and health, as well as property crimes, and has spent many years in prison. Due to his age at the time of the crime, he faces a sentence of 8 to 15 years or 25 years in prison.
The unidentified victim
Despite the breakthrough arrest, the identity of the murdered man remains unknown. Police continue to appeal for information that could help identify him. The facial reconstruction and the review of missing persons cases have not yet produced a name. The investigation into the victim's identity is ongoing.
