Mecklenburg-Vorpommern records 144 new SED victim pension applications in 2026 as monthly amount rises to 417 euros

New applications still coming decades later

More than three decades after German reunification, people in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are still applying for the SED victim pension. Justice Minister Jacqueline Bernhardt (Linke) reported 144 new applications filed in 2026, averaging roughly five per week. The figure shows that some victims of GDR injustice are only now coming forward.

The suffering endured certainly cannot be made good with money. But the SED victim pension is a small contribution that is intended to provide some financial compensation.

Monthly amount increased to 417 euros

On 1 July 2026 the monthly SED victim pension rose from 400 euros to 417 euros. The increase benefits 3,003 people in the state. The adjustment is meant to keep pace with general price inflation. The state budget for the pension in 2026 is 16.3 million euros.

It is an important signal to those affected who suffered state-organized persecution before 1989.

Law change ties pension to general pension development

A legal amendment passed in 2025 now pegs the SED victim pension to the annual adjustment of the statutory pension insurance system. From 2026 onward, the payment will be recalculated each year on 1 July by the same percentage that the general pension increases. This replaces ad-hoc adjustments and ensures a regular mechanism.

Background of the SED victim pension

The SED victim pension was introduced in 2007 and improved in 2019. Eligibility requires that a person served a prison sentence of at least 90 days in the former GDR that was incompatible with fundamental principles of a liberal constitutional order, and that the person has received criminal rehabilitation. The current figures reflect ongoing administrative processing of historical cases.
