Two youths arrested in Spain for beating homeless man unconscious in aporophobia hate crime
Police in Mairena del Aljarafe arrested an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old after video captured them kicking a homeless man unconscious in a park following days of harassment.
Night assault in a municipal park
Officers from the Guardia Civil, operating in joint coordination with the Local Police of Mairena del Aljarafe, arrested two young men aged 18 and 19 following a violent physical assault on a homeless man in the province of Seville. The attack took place during nighttime hours inside a public park located within the municipality. According to official police accounts, the two young men chased the victim across the park grounds until they violently forced him to fall to the ground. Once the man was lying defenseless and immobile, the assailants delivered a barrage of kicks aimed directly at his face and head. The repeated strikes continued uninterrupted until the victim lost consciousness, leaving him incapacitated on the park ground.
Neighbour intervention and medical assistance
Several residents living in nearby properties witnessed the beating as it occurred and intervened verbally by shouting to challenge the conduct of the two youths. The neighbours also recorded video footage of the aggression on their phones, documenting the chase and the physical violence as it unfolded. Upon noticing that they were being observed and filmed by area residents, the two attackers fled the park on foot, leaving the victim lying unconscious on the ground. When the victim eventually regained consciousness, he left the immediate location of the attack on his own initiative. Healthcare workers subsequently located the injured man in the municipality and administered medical treatment for the severe contusions and trauma sustained to his head and face.
Sustained harassment over preceding days
The inquiry conducted by the Guardia Civil established that the park assault was the culmination of sustained harassment and intimidation against the homeless victim over several preceding days. Investigating officers determined that the two suspects deliberately targeted the individual by taking advantage of his special vulnerability and unprotected living conditions. During the days leading up to the park beating, the suspects repeatedly located the man at the outdoor shelter where he spent the nighttime hours. The youths subjected the victim to continuous verbal threats and threw projectiles, including stones and oranges, at him while he was lying down and sleeping.
Social media footage and judicial proceedings
The video recordings captured by the neighbours were disseminated across several social media platforms, enabling law enforcement to obtain clear visual records of the attack. Investigators from the Investigation Area at the Guardia Civil Main Post in Mairena del Aljarafe analyzed the footage alongside the Local Police to establish the identities of both suspects, who reside in the municipality. Police located and arrested the 18-year-old and 19-year-old men, formally transferring them into the custody of the competent judicial authority. The suspects face investigation for the crime of causing severe injuries and for hate crimes under the specific category of aporophobia, which Spanish law classifies as bias and hostility directed against impoverished and vulnerable people.
