Trump waited on the tarmac for approximately 45 minutes before the arrival of the Chinese delegation. The reception featured full military honors and a red carpet laid out across the airfield, departing from the standard diplomatic custom of receiving visiting heads of state directly at the White House. The elaborate military greeting serves as a reciprocal gesture following the ceremonial welcome Trump received during his official visit to Beijing in May. Former National Security Council official Rush Doshi noted that an in-person tarmac greeting by a sitting US president is an unusual honor for a visiting leader.

The arrival marks Xi's first official state visit to Washington since 2015, when he was received by President Barack Obama, and his first meeting with Trump on American soil since their 2017 summit at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Xi traveled directly to the capital, choosing not to attend the United Nations General Assembly plenary session that began on Monday in New York, roughly 350 kilometres away. The official itinerary for Thursday includes an aerial display featuring one B-2 stealth bomber and four F-22 fighter jets, followed by a formal honor guard ceremony. In the evening, the White House will host a state dinner attended by chief executives of leading technology corporations. The discussions between the delegations will address bilateral trade disputes, security plans concerning Taiwan, and the ongoing war involving Iran.

Competition over artificial intelligence

The race for leadership in artificial intelligence stands as a central point of friction between the two economies. Representatives of American technology companies, including Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei, have urged Washington to expand export restrictions on critical hardware and software to prevent Chinese companies from gaining technological dominance. Chinese officials have strongly resisted American initiatives that would slow AI development speeds.

Intimidation, confrontation, and ruthless competition will only disrupt the process of global AI governance, which is in nobody's interest.

While Chinese State Security Minister Chen Yixin has warned internally that advanced AI models could threaten the political stability and authority of the Chinese Communist Party, Beijing continues to enforce domestic regulatory oversight while expanding international access. According to the Beijing-based research firm Trivium China, Beijing is tightening its own safety rules while rejecting any limits on the pace of technological development. During the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai in July, Xi announced thousands of training positions in AI for developing nations to promote Chinese standards across emerging markets.

Trump approaches the negotiations seeking Beijing's diplomatic assistance in addressing conflicts involving Iran and Russia, while aiming for trade concessions ahead of the November congressional elections. For Beijing, the high-profile summit reinforces its standing as a peer superpower to the United States on the global stage. In the months leading up to the Washington visit, Xi reinforced his diplomatic relationships through meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Formal bilateral negotiations between the American and Chinese delegations continue throughout Thursday.
