The German Academy for Language and Literature has named Christine Wunnicke as the recipient of the 2026 Georg-Büchner-Preis, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the German-speaking world.

The German Academy for Language and Literature in Darmstadt has selected Christine Wunnicke as the recipient of the 2026 Georg-Büchner-Preis. The academy announced the decision on 9 July. The prize carries a €50,000 endowment and is widely regarded as one of the most significant literary awards in the German-speaking world. It has been presented annually since 1951, making this the 74th edition.

A legacy of winners
The Georg-Büchner-Preis has been awarded to 74 writers, 13 of them women. Among the most celebrated female laureates are Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf, and Marie Luise Kaschnitz.
