WTA reduces mandatory 500-level events to four and equalizes 1000 prize money for 2027
The Women's Tennis Association announced rule changes for the 2027 season, cutting mandatory WTA 500 appearances from six to four, equalizing prize money at combined WTA 1000 events, and relocating the season finals to Charlotte.
Revised tournament obligations and ranking rules
The Women's Tennis Association published its official 2027 calendar on 1 October 2026, introducing adjustments to mandatory tournament requirements for top-ranked players. Under the updated regulations, competitors in the top 50 of the world rankings must participate in four WTA 500 events rather than six. The overall baseline commitment for elite players will consist of 14 WTA tournaments, covering ten WTA 1000 competitions and four WTA 500 events, in addition to the four Grand Slam tournaments. Furthermore, players will have the option to replace one eligible WTA 1000 ranking score with a higher finish recorded at a WTA 500 or WTA 250 event. If an athlete travels to a WTA 500 venue but withdraws before competing, she will avoid ranking point penalties provided she completes her mandatory marketing and promotional commitments.
- Until 2026
- 6 tournaments
- From 2027
- 4 tournaments
Equal prize money expansion across combined events
The organization also confirmed full financial parity across all combined WTA 1000 tournaments starting in the 2027 season. Men and women will compete for equal prize money pools at every shared event on the calendar. Tournaments in Rome, Canada, and Cincinnati will match the payouts awarded to ATP players, joining existing equal-prize events in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and Beijing. The rule modifications will initially function as a pilot program throughout the 2027 season, with the WTA evaluating player physical condition, attendance figures, and operational results before deciding whether to retain the framework in subsequent years.
Player advocacy and schedule management
The policy updates follow persistent public criticism of the congested tennis schedule by several active competitors, including Iga Świątek. During the 2024 season, Świątek repeatedly stated that player health must take priority over tour requirements, noting that rigid mandatory commitments forced players to risk point penalties to secure adequate rest and training time.
Sensational news from Bounces: The new WTA Tournament Architecture Council is making changes that it has made to the 2027 calendar, including a possibly drastic change to the WTA Finals format. Plus big news for the Philippines.
Journalist Ben Rothenberg reported that the newly formed WTA Tournament Architecture Council communicated the changes to players during the ongoing tournament in Beijing. The previous regulations had drawn criticism after unserved quotas led to ranking deductions that directly influenced the ranking competition between Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka.
WTA Finals relocation and calendar additions
The governing body finalized adjustments to its premier events, completing a multi-year hosting agreement for the season-ending WTA Finals. Between 2027 and 2029, the season finale will take place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, the home venue of the NBA Charlotte Hornets. The WTA will also relocate its global headquarters to Charlotte under the terms of the agreement. Because the arena hosts professional basketball during that period, organizers intend to compress the tournament schedule from its traditional eight-day format down to five days. WTA executive Valerie Camillo confirmed that discussions remain active with players concerning format revisions for the compressed timeframe. In Asia, Manila in the Philippines will host a new WTA 250 event in late October or early November 2027, taking over the calendar slot from Chennai, India.
