Wimbledon 2026 draw: Świątek opens defence against Townsend, Linette lands French Open champion Andreeva
Defending champion Iga Świątek will face American Taylor Townsend in the first round of Wimbledon 2026, while wild card Maja Chwalińska takes on a Thai qualifier and Magda Linette drew fifth seed Mirra Andreeva.
Singles draw
The draw for the third Grand Slam of the season, held on Friday in London, paired Poland's six singles entrants with opponents. Iga Świątek, the defending champion and third seed, starts her campaign against world No. 81 Taylor Townsend, a left-hander known for her volleys and net play. The two have never met before.
Maja Chwalińska, a wild card seeded 20th after reaching the French Open final, will play Mananchaya Sawangkaew (No. 164) of Thailand, who came through qualifying. Bookmakers give Chwalińska around a 57% chance of advancing, while Świątek's first-round odds sit above 85%.
Magda Linette drew the toughest task: fifth seed Mirra Andreeva, the French Open champion. Linette trails their head-to-head 1-3. Magdalena Fręch faces another Russian, 19th seed Anna Kalinska, against whom she holds a 2-1 record. In the men's singles, Hubert Hurkacz (95 ATP) meets 11th seed Casper Ruud, a player who has never passed the second round at Wimbledon. Hurkacz reached the semi-finals in 2021. Kamil Majchrzak will try to reverse an 0-2 record against 30th seed Alejandro Tabilo.
Expert reaction
Eurosport commentator Tomasz Wolfke said the outcome could force changes in Świątek's team after a recent grass-court loss in Bad Homburg where she served seven double faults in one set. "If the quarterfinal is not reached, it will trigger a huge alarm," he said, suggesting a change of psychologist may be needed if Wimbledon disappoints.
Both Magdas have tough matches; if even one advances to the second round, it will be a success.
Wolfke also noted that Townsend's volleys and quick reactions could trouble Świątek, while Chwalińska is on a rising trajectory. Portuguese journalist Jose Morgado reacted to the Hurkacz-Ruud matchup with an exclamation:
OMG Ruud vs. Hurkacz in 1st round.

Bookmakers price Świątek at 11% to retain her title, behind Aryna Sabalenka (23%) and Elena Rybakina (18%). Chwalińska is quoted at 1%, Linette and Fręch at 0.3% each.
