WhatsApp opens username reservations for its 3 billion users, letting them chat without sharing a phone number
WhatsApp began accepting username reservations on Monday, a first step toward letting its 3 billion users connect without sharing their phone numbers. The long-requested privacy feature is expected to roll out gradually in the coming months.
Reservation opens for 3 billion users
WhatsApp announced on Monday that users can now reserve a unique username, a first step toward a long-awaited privacy feature that will let people connect without sharing their phone number. The reservation is available globally, but the actual ability to use usernames for contact will be activated gradually over the coming months. "We think many people will want to reserve theirs as soon as possible, and that's why we opened the process early," said Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's vice president of product.

How the feature will work
Once activated, a username will replace the phone number when contacting someone for the first time. The person reaching out must know the exact username; there will be no public directory or auto-suggestions. Users can also set an optional password, a username key, adding another layer of security. Usernames must be unique and between three and 40 characters long. A built-in generator helps those stuck for ideas.
People will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time.
Privacy push and competition
The move closes a privacy gap that rivals addressed years ago. Telegram offers public usernames with optional phone-number hiding. Signal introduced username-based contact in 2024 but does not display the name in profiles and requires at least two digits at the end to reduce impersonation. WhatsApp’s approach is stricter: no directory, no suggestions, and an optional key, positioning it as a more privacy-conscious alternative.
Rollout timeline and next steps
The reservation process started on 29 June 2026 and is being introduced gradually. Users need the latest app version and can find the option under Settings > Account > Username. The company will send in-app notifications when the feature becomes available in each country. A full global rollout is expected by the end of the year.
