Walmart cuts prices on beef, cherries and summer goods as Trump claims credit for the move
The retailer announced reductions on ground beef, cherries, Coca-Cola and seasonal products, while the president said the cuts came at his administration's request for the 250th anniversary.
The price cuts
Walmart, the largest U.S. grocer, said on Monday it was lowering prices on thousands of items to help customers cope with years of inflation. The cuts cover ground beef (down 12%), cherries (halved in price), a 24-pack of Coca-Cola, and a range of summer goods including produce, drinks, pools, toys, grills and clothing. Julie Barber, chief merchant of Walmart U.S., described the move as "investments in price" for the season.
Whether they're stocking up for a backyard barbecue, heading out on vacation or simply shopping for the week ahead, we're helping everyone save more for every occasion.
Trump's claim
Shortly after the announcement, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he had been informed Walmart was cutting prices "at my administration's request to celebrate our great country's 250th birthday." He called the retailer "a truly patriotic Company" and urged other chains to follow. Walmart's statement, however, was published on its website before Trump's 4:45 p.m. post and made no mention of the president or his administration.
I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my administration's request to celebrate our great country's 250th birthday.
The numbers
Trump claimed the price of a pound of ground beef would fall "almost" 15%, but Walmart's own figure is 12%. The retailer also halved the price of cherries and cut the cost of a 24-pack of Coca-Cola, though it did not specify the size of that reduction. The discounts are part of a broader summer push that includes pools, toys, grills and clothing.

Industry backdrop
The cuts arrive as grocery chains test selective price reductions to win back shoppers worn down by inflation. In June, Kroger executives told investors they were running price tests on certain items, hoping to lift basket sizes. Walmart's move, while modest in scope, signals that even the largest players see price as a competitive lever in a still-cautious consumer environment.
